Matt Grimes reckons his Swansea City career is finally taking off – even if it has taken three years and several loan moves.
The midfielder has played in five of the Swans six games this season under new boss Graham Potter and is relishing the opportunity.
“I feel like my Swansea career hasn’t really kickstarted yet,” said Grimes, hoping he will feature in Saturday’s Championship game at Millwall.
“I’ve had some games here and there, but I’m ready to take my opportunity and show what I can do.
“The gaffer has given me a lot of confidence by ensuring I have been involved in all the games so far. The fact I have already played more games this season for Swansea than I have in past campaigns is a good sign.
“He has shown trust in me, so I want to repay him with good performances.”
Grimes moved to the Liberty from Exeter City in 2015 with a reputation as a fine young talent with plenty of potential.
The 23-year-old played three times in the Premier League that season and had four more games the following campaign – opening his Swans goal tally – before joining Blackburn Rovers on loan.
Grimes had a season long loan at Leeds in 2016-17, making just 11 appearances, but he racked up 47 matches at Northampton Town last season, scoring four goals for the League One outfit, before returning to his parent club – and a new manager.
“I didn’t really know what to expect having been out on loan for the past two seasons,” Grimes told Swansea City.com
“I was at Northampton last season and got a lot of games under my belt. It raised my confidence and when I came back with a new manager here I felt it was a new opportunity.
“Hopefully I’m doing enough for him to keep selecting me – whether that’s off the bench or from the start – because I’m ready to take the opportunity when it comes.
