Chris Coleman has opened the door to a possible U-turn over his decision to stand down as Wales manager.
The 47-year-old has previously stated he would leave his post after the current World Cup campaign – regardless of whether or not his team qualifies for the finals in Russia next summer.
But after naming a 25-man squad for the crunch qualifiers with Austria and Moldova, Coleman revealed he will soon discuss his future with his Football Association of Wales bosses.
Wales face Austria in Cardiff on September 2 before travelling to Moldova the following Tuesday.
“I never think past the next game, it’s a policy I’ve had for some years. Whatever will be will be,” Coleman said. “I know what I said at the start of the campaign.
“After these two games are up – not during them – then of course there’ll be another conversation.
“The people above me have been very good and they have kept faith in me. There has always been a good relationship. Qualification for Russia is very much alive and there is loads to play for.
“I think we have a better chance than most people think. My contract will be finished at the end of the World Cup and at the moment, that’s what I’m reaching for.”
Coleman led Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, but his hopes of taking his team to Russia remain in the balance. The former defender has been boosted by the return of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale to his latest squad after he missed the trip to Serbia through suspension.
Aston Villa defender Neil Taylor also returns from a ban after he broke Seamus Coleman’s leg in the 0-0 draw with Republic of Ireland.
Midfielder Joe Ledley is included despite currently being without a club, while Chelsea’s 16-year-old Ethan Ampadu and Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn are also named.
Ampadu does not celebrate his 17th birthday until next month but Coleman says he has no qualms calling on him if necessary.
“In terms of his ability and level of football he is capable of being with us in the 23,” Coleman said. “He’s not a player I’ve put in for the sake of it.”
Wales are four points behind Group D front-runners Serbia and the Republic of Ireland with four games to go.
“It’s like knock-out football for us at the moment,” Coleman said. “But this is also Austria’s last chance as well, so this is a great game for us. I’m excited by it.”
