Brian Barry-Murphy Kicks Cardiff City's Chelsea Tie Into the Long Grass

Brian Barry-Murphy insists his Cardiff City players will remain fully focused on their League One campaign — despite the excitement surrounding their Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea.

The Bluebirds’ reward for their dramatic Welsh derby win over Wrexham is a home fixture against the Premier League giants, set to take place in the week beginning 15 December. 

But while the tie represents a dream occasion for supporters, manager Barry-Murphy has made it clear that his team’s promotion push takes priority.

"Chelsea at home is a great opportunity for all of our supporters to attend a game against a team who are the world champions and possess so many world-class players," Barry-Murphy said. 

"It's going to be a great occasion when it comes round. I think it's an amazing draw for the club but it seems so far off in the distance, based on how long it's going to be until we actually play that game. 

“I think it probably reinforces more than ever that we have to focus on the now and prepare for Saturday."

Cardiff are currently third in League One and travel to Peterborough United this weekend in the FA Cup first round. 

The manager is determined not to let the Chelsea clash overshadow the vital run of fixtures ahead.

"It’s a new experience for me and I think it’s very exciting for the players," he said following the win over Wrexham. 

"I think you have a choice at the start of this competition how seriously you want to take it, and when you do take it as seriously as we have done you’re always hopeful of progressing as far as you can.

“The uncertain nature of who you’re going to face in the next round is what makes it so exciting."

Having guided his side to the quarter-finals — their best performance in the competition since reaching the 2012 final — Barry-Murphy acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge ahead but praised his players for staying grounded.
"It's an amazing draw against an amazing team, an amazing club," he added. 
"But for the players, they'll just be focused on training today, training tomorrow and trying to prepare for Saturday. 

“We never look further than today, one day at a time, because of how important it is. 

“Over the past seven days, you've seen the nature of football and the ups and downs. You go from Saturday at Bolton to Tuesday at Wrexham. 

“So we just have to remain consistent in the way that we train and try and play."

The Bluebirds, the only non-Premier League side left in the competition, will relish their underdog status when Chelsea visit the Cardiff City Stadium. 

Defender Perry Ng echoed his manager’s sentiments while expressing the squad’s excitement about the upcoming tie.

"I think if we can get our place bouncing, I'm sure Brian won't tell us to take a step back," Ng said. 

"I'm sure we'll go at them full force like we have been doing to other teams and see what happens. 

“The group chat was bouncing, so yeah, I'm buzzing to go in and see them all and see what everyone thinks. 

“I went to watch the Wales game the other day and the atmosphere was bouncing. 

“Even the Swansea games we've had previously, the stadium's unreal, the atmosphere is class and it gives you that extra buzz on the pitch. 

“So I can't wait to get out there hopefully and... go at them full force like I said and see what happens."

The quarter-final line-up is now complete, with Cardiff drawn alongside Newcastle United, Fulham, Manchester City, Brentford, Arsenal, and Crystal Palace. 


The full draw for the Carabao Cup quarter-final is:

Newcastle United v Fulham

Manchester City v Brentford

Cardiff City v Chelsea

Arsenal v Crystal Palace

All four ties will take place in the week beginning 15 December.
