Gareth Bale could miss both of Wales’ two Euro2016 warm-up games this month says manager Chris Coleman.
The Real Madrid ace has been sidelined for six weeks with a calf injury but is back training with the Spanish giants.
But Coleman could rest Bale from either the game with Northern Ireland on March 24 or in the Ukraine four days later – or both.
The Dragons boss, who is also set to open talks about extending his contract, said: “We will have to wait and see in the next week or two what happens.
“And if he is not available, he is not available. He has had a bit of a time of it with Madrid, in terms of injury, a bit stop-start.
“But Real Madrid have been so good with us in terms of how they have treated us.
“They have been very respectful. They have never ever put an obstacle in our way, in terms of getting Gareth.
“We need to repay that compliment. If he has not had enough game time and he needs to have more time there then so be it.
“Mentally he is very tough and basically it is about making sure he is 100% fit.”
Coleman’s current deal runs out this summer but is expected to agree a new deal after leading Wales to their first major finals since 1958.
The 45-year-old added: “Ideally we’ll know what we’re doing before we go to the tournament so everybody is settled.
“In fairness to the FAW, at Christmas they said let’s sit down, so they were pro-active.
“But we’ve had so much going on trying to prepare for this tournament and we said the best time will be March, so next week we’ll sit down and discuss it.
“If the talks go well and everything is fine, then brilliant. But if we’re miles apart on different things, then let’s just concentrate on the tournament.
”We’ve worked so hard to get here, that’s all that matters. What comes after, comes after.”
