Alan Sheehan Told To Carry On For Another Week At Stumbling Swansea City

The sense of drift at Swansea City goes on as back-to-back defeats pull the club back towards a possible relegation scrap.

Alan Sheehan has been asked to stay in charge at Swansea City after the club’s managerial situation remained unresolved.

The interim boss, who stepped in following Luke Williams’ departure last month, is set for discussions with director of football Richard Montague about whether he will be given the role on a permanent basis.

Sheehan had initially been tasked with leading the squad up until Saturday’s clash with Burnley, but after Swansea’s 2-0 home defeat, his future remains unclear.

With the club yet to make a decision on their next manager, Sheehan has been told to oversee training during the international break before the Swans return to Championship action against Leeds United in two weeks.

"I've been asked to take a meeting this week and take training on Tuesday and Wednesday," Sheehan confirmed.

"There's a good few lads away in the international break. These are difficult periods in terms of getting everyone together on the training pitch.

“I think everyone's back on Wednesday, Thursday before Leeds, so that's when you have the full group together."

Since Williams’ exit, Swansea have been exploring potential managerial candidates both domestically and abroad.

While Sheehan made a strong start with two wins and a draw, back-to-back defeats against Watford and Burnley have left the Swans just six points above the relegation zone with eight games left to play.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty, Sheehan remains positive about the progress made during his short tenure.

"I don't want us to come away from how much of a positive period this has actually been, from where we were to where we are," he said.

"Sometimes we get bogged down by the performance against a [Burnley] team that's going to probably be in the top two. It has been a positive period in terms of points, and in terms of what was asked and what we got.

"I think we've got more than what was expected, and I think we've got to be positive about that really."

Sheehan acknowledged that the club is continuing its search for a long-term appointment but is open to discussions about his own future.

"We need to have a conversation and see what's in place. Like I've said numerous times, I'm sure the football club is speaking to a number of candidates and applicants, and rightfully so.

“I think it's important the football club finds the right person to move forward with," he said.

Adding to the uncertainty is the news that Swansea chairman Andy Coleman will step down at the end of the season, though Sheehan admits he is unsure whether that situation will affect his own position.

"I think the conversation is with Richard this week to see where we are," he said.

Sheehan has been in interim charge since the sacking of Luke Williams last month, and had previously been asked to oversee the first the team up until Saturday's clash with Burnley.

That game, which the Swans lost 2-0, is now in the rear-view mirror, and there's clearly still some uncertainty over whether Sheehan will still be in charge for the trip to Leeds United in a fortnight's time.

However, it seems the Irishman will still be in the building during this international break, ahead of talks with director of football Richard Montague.

"I've been asked to take a meeting this week and take training on Tuesday and Wednesday and then we've got a couple of days," he said.

"There's a good few lads away in the international break. These are difficult periods in terms of getting everyone together on the training pitch. I think everyone's back in the Wednesday, Thursday before Leeds. So that's when you have the full group together.

"We'll have conversations this week with the football club about how they want to move forward. That will happen this week," he added.

"We need to have a conversation and see what's in place. Like I've said numerous times, I'm sure the football club is speaking to a number of candidates and applicants, and rightfully so. I think it's important the football club finds the right person to move forward with."
