By Tom Prosser Wales’ Olympic and Paralympic heroes were celebrated at a special homecoming at the Senedd on Monday evening. Three time gold medalist Aled Davies, Taekwondo silver medalist Lauren Williams and Joshua Bugajski who won bronze in the rowing were all in attendance. Hockey bronze medal duo Leah Wilkinson and Sarah Jones were also at the event. The couple are currently planning their wedding and were thrilled to both be in the same team in Tokyo.
Aled Davies is not a man for looking in the rear view mirror which is why the road to Paris is his focus as he returns from Tokyo as one of four Welsh gold medalists from the Paralympics. Davies retained his Paralympic title in the men’s F63 shot put to join the likes of Tanni Grey-Thompson and David Roberts as Welsh athletes who have brought gold home for Great Britain at three or more Games. The Bridgend thrower was one of 21 Welsh competitors in Japan, who picked up a total of 14 medals for Team GB.

Olivia Breen will be the first of Wales’ magnificent seven track and field stars to compete when the athletics schedule gets underway at the Tokyo Paralympics. The sprinter will take to the blocks in the early hours of Saturday morning when she lines up for the women’s T38 100m. The heats start at 2:38am UK time and should Breen qualify, she would line up for the final at a minute after noon the same day.

The Cardiff Athletics thrower won gold in Rio five years ago to add to his illustrious list of career titles. Having burst onto the international scene with gold and bronze medals at the 2012 London Paralympics, Davies will be defending his title in the men’s F63 shot put on Saturday 4 September.

Three Welsh athletes have been named in the first group selected to represent Great Britain at the rescheduled 2020 Paralympics this summer. Reigning champions Hollie Arnold and Aled Davies are joined by Sabrina Fortune in the first wave of selections for Tokyo. Arnold, who won Commonwealth Games gold for Wales in 2018, will be looking to defend the title she won five years ago in Rio in the women’s F46 javelin.

Harrison Walsh celebrated his senior Great Britain debut with a discus bronze medal at the European Para Athletics Championships in Poland on Friday night. The Disability Sports Wales Para Academy athlete produced a huge new personal best, launching the discus out to 54.85m – almost two and a half metres further than his previous best.
