Warren Gatland has revealed he never considered leaving Alun Wyn Jones out of his Lions squad – even though the Wales forward may not play again this season. Jones is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury and Ospreys coach Steve Tandy has said his skipper could miss their remaining two Guinness Pro12 matches as well as the play-offs if they get there.
Wales host the Home International Masters Squash Championships this weekend. The over-50 and over-70 events are being played at Sport Wales National Centre and Cardiff Squash Club on Friday and Saturday. Wales play England, Scotland and Ireland over the two days. Sian Johnson and former Cardiff SRC coach Gary Hales are captains for the over-50 […]
Gavin Chesterfield and Barry’s Barmy Army fans are on the march – and they are heading to the Rhondda aiming to win the championship. The next test for Chesterfield’s men is a trip to play Cambrian and Clydach on Saturday. They have already clinched promotion and a win at Cambrian would make sure of the […]
Three former Cardiff City coaches and a Welshman are battling for Football League survival. Dave Jones and Kevin Cooper, who were both with the Bluebirds, are going head-to-head with Newport-born Mike Flynn and ex-Cardiff manager Lennie Lawrence. Jones and Cooper are in charge at Hartlepool United, who are one point in front of Newport County […]
Former West Ham and Wales midfield player Gavin Williams is under no illusions about the task his Merthyr Town team face in the Southern League play-offs. The Martyrs have already qualified and will ensure they have a home tie in the semi-final if they beat Hayes and Yeading in their final Premier Division match at […]
Celtic Dragons are out to inflict more pain on Vitality Netball Superleague rivals Team Bath. Anna Stembridge, Bath’s head coach, admits her players are ‘hurting’ after a run of four successive defeats, but says they have not given up on a place in the end-of-season play-offs. Dragons and their Green Army fans are feeling good […]
Paul Clement has insisted Swansea City can stay up – and revealed he would be keen to add John Terry to his Premier League squad for next season. The Swans head coach admits time is running out for his team, who are two points adrift of safety with just five games remaining.
South Wales Warriors’ next challenge is to face a man who has overcome one of the biggest. Quarterback Ben Denton will lead the Oxford Saints against the Warriors on Sunday, having returned to American football after battling a rare cancer. The 27-year-old missed almost all of the Saints’ championship-winning 2016 campaign as he underwent treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.
Ben Bowns and Stephen Murphy go head-to-head in their quest to be Great Britain’s starting netminder. Cardiff Devils goalie Bowns and Murphy, who plays for Belfast Giants, are in the GB team for their World Championship group matches. The six-team tournament, at the SSE Arena in Belfast, starts on Sunday when Britain play Croatia. They […]
The 12 Welsh Lions for 2017 are: Dan Biggar, Jonathan Davies, Taulupe Faletau, Leigh Halfpenny, Alun Wyn Jones, Ross Moriarty, George North, Ken Owens, Rhys Webb, Justin Tipuric, Sam Warburton (captain) and Liam Williams. But who went before? The Lions haven’t won a series in New Zealand since John Dawes led the 1971 team to a 2-1 victory with one further game drawn. There were 13 Welshmen involved in that tour, while in 1977, when Phil Bennett led the side to New Zealand, there were 18 Welsh players involved.
So, the Lions have been picked and soon they will be sent. But why these 41 and how much bang has Warren Gatland got for his buck? Geraint Powell checks all the coins in Gatland’s pocket and ponders whether it all adds up. The British & Irish Lions squad for the summer tour of New Zealand has been announced, finally ending months of increasingly silly speculation about the composition of the squad in the media. The Lions seem to have become one major exercise in clickbait, making selections on the basis of individual performance in every match without reference to the All Blacks and a game plan.
Georgia Davies boosted her hopes of being named in the World Championships team after breaking her Welsh 100m Backstroke record in Sheffield. The 26-year-old clocked 59.34 secs to win the British title having dominated the race from the start.
Warren Gatland has made plenty of enemies with his Lions selection, but cannot be accused, yet, of making mistakes, says Gareth Hughes. That will be decided by results, regardless of whether or not ‘Warrenball’ is revived. After the smoke and mirrors, rumours and innuendo of the last 24 hours, the British and Irish Lions touring party has been announced at last and the speculation can end. The strength of interest in the Lions has been amply shown by the meltdown on social media the announcement caused. Gatland and his coaching team have partly shown their hand but, until the group arrive in NZ intact, how they will play is not certain. The chosen team members now have to get through some of their most challenging games of the season with the various cup finals and league finales ahead. Everyone concerned will be crossing their fingers over the coming weeks that they emerge unscathed.
The Lions squad has a thicker band of red than most Wales fans would have guessed – and more than was deserved, according to Robin Davey. The Scots, he says, have been short-changed with their thin blue line. Warren Gatland may be taking a jumbo-sized 41-man Lions squad to New Zealand this summer, but how on earth have Wales managed to get 12 players on to the plane? A mediocre autumn series last year was followed by an unsuccessful Six Nations campaign which ended with Wales finishing in a lowly fifth position, only the hapless Italians below them in the table.
Cardiff Devils will start playing again in mid-August. The Elite League ice hockey champions have confirmed their pre-season fixtures and three of them are at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay. Player-Coach Andrew Lord and his team have their first challenge game against Nottingham Panthers away on Saturday, August 12, while they also take on […]
Lee Peltier is preparing to help Cardiff City launch a push to qualify for the Championship play-offs next season. Manager Neil Warnock has improved the Bluebirds in terms of results dramatically, leading a team who were second from bottom at one stage into the top half. “We were right down there at the start of […]
Mark O’Brien and Joss Labadie both return for Newport County in Saturday’s League Two home match against Accrington Stanley. Dublin-born defender O’Brien, 24, is ready to play after injury, while 26-year-old Labadie has completed a three-match suspension. “Mark had signs of concussion and that automatically ruled him out for the week,” said manager Mike Flynn. […]
Ross Moriarty admitted he was honoured and shocked to be handed his British & Irish Lions call-up for the tour to New Zealand. The Gloucester back row forward is one of 12 Wales players named in Warren Gatland’s squad.
Merthyr Town will be battling with Leamington, Hitchin and Slough for the right to earn promotion via the Southern League play-offs. The four have already qualified, but it’s not clear yet in exactly which order they will finish. Leamington will be at home in the play-off semi-finals having clinched runners-up spot, while the other three […]
