Five hundred runners will be heading to Llanelli’s Festival Fields on Sunday to take part in the Great Welsh Marathon and Half Marathon. Known as South Wales’ ONLY marathon, the race has been a long established event on the running calendar.
Mike Flynn insists he will offer no advice on how Newport County’s players should cope with the club’s day of destiny on Saturday. The caretaker manager – who has taken his team to the brink of survival – must inspire them for one last heroic deed at home to Notts County. If Newport can win, then they will preserve their status in the Football League, but anything less could mean final day relegation if similarly threatened Hartlepool manage to beat League Two title-chasing Doncaster Rovers.

Former professional tour player Barry Hume will return to defend the Welsh Open Stroke Play title he won at Royal St David’s in 2016. The former Asian Tour player had a prolific amateur career before turning professional, but regained his amateur status in 2013.
Just two Welsh players – Scarlets pair Ken Owens and James Davies – have made the Guinness Pro12 Dream Team for this season. Owens, who is off on his first Lions tour later this month, makes the side at hooker, whilst Davies – who could make the Wales squad for their South Seas tour this summer – is included in the back row. But that is it as far as representation from the four Welsh regions is concerned with no-one from the Ospreys, The Cardiff Blues or the Newport Gwent Dragons making the cut.
Southampton is the first stop for the South Wales Warriors as they hit the road for a run of five away games while still searching for their first win of the season. The Ospreys have regularly been able to boss the West Wales derby. But with the Guinness Pro12 play-offs looming, Gareth Hughes reckons the Scarlets are now in the driving seat. On Saturday at Parc y Scarlets, arguably one of the biggest games in Welsh rugby for a decade will take place, with both sides playing for play-off places, to decide the 3rd and 4th positions in the Pro12. The Scarlets have turned their home ground into a fortress this season and with a potential full house will use that to their advantage. The Ospreys beat much-fancied Ulster last week, ending a run of defeats that threatened to derail their season.
Paul Clement insists he is going nowhere at the end of the season – even if Swansea City are relegated from the Premier League. As the Swans gear up for their next crucial survival task at home to Everton on Saturday, the head coach has moved to eradicate any speculation over his own future.

Mike Flynn will hold talks over his future with Newport County next week – regardless of whether or not they are still in the Football League. The caretaker boss wants to remain in charge at the club, even if the worst happens and they are relegated from League Two on Saturday night.
Bangor City’s Henry Jones should be regarded as favourite to win the Welsh Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award writes Matthew Burgess. The 23-year-old midfielder was named as one of three nominees to win the annual award earlier this week along with Bala Town’s Anthony Stephens and Llandudno’s James Joyce. James Joyce, 22, […]
TNS manager Craig Harrison has spoken of his desire to manage at the highest possible level after overseeing his side’s record-breaking campaign. Reports emerged last week linking Harrison with struggling League 2 outfit Hartlepool United to once raised questions over the long-term future of the record-breaking TNS manager. Might Newport RFC, if set free by severance on 9th May, actually be on the crest of a renaissance? Amidst all the doom-mongering over the future of rugby in Newport and Gwent, Geraint Powell looks at whether Newport RFC might possibly be on the verge of becoming much stronger in the Premiership if the shackles are finally released? It has perhaps to date been inevitable that the focus in Welsh and Gwent (including the city of Newport) rugby has mostly been on the future of the Newport Gwent Dragons professional regional franchise, with very little written in the media about the future of the historic Newport RFC itself and despite the references to this future in the documentation for the shareholders. The Newport RFC angle is frequently, if not unreasonably, dism
Just as those who wanted to do an Irish jig on the grave of Welsh regional rugby were reaching for their dancing shoes, two of them go and make the Pro12 play-offs. Not only that, says Robin Davey, but there are other reasons to be cheerful. It seems the much-heralded demise of the Welsh regions was something of a damp squib, after all. Just at the time when most, if not all, the pundits were fearful of where Welsh rugby was going – amid the sound and fury of the English and French scattering all before them – the Welsh regions have been staging something of a revival.
Alfie is back. But this time he is looking to get young people off the sofa and into their running shoes to take on the Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon. But this time around he is inviting 100 young men and women aged 17-21 to join ‘Alfie’s Army’ for a challenge of a lifetime on October 1st.
