Rhys Webb has admitted it is time for Wales to start winning again this season. The Ospreys scrum-half is unlikely to return when the campaign starts next month, but when his extended leave is over following Lions duty in New Zealand, Webb is clearly anxious to make a mark. It will be approaching five years since Wales last won a Six Nations trophy or Triple Crown when the season begins – and although Wales beat South Africa last autumn, it is nine years since Warren Gatland’s team beat Australia and 64 since the last victory over New Zealand.

Paul Clement has vowed that Swansea City will avoid the chaos of last minute deals that almost sent them down last season. The Swans boss is bracing himself for the loss of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton for £50m, but is determined to avoid the tailspin caused by the departure of Ashley Williams a year ago. Toffees manager Ronald Koeman has said a deal between the two clubs for the Icelandic star is close, but the saga is already resembling last year’s protracted pursuit of the club’s former skipper that went into the start of the season.
Welsh marathon legend Steve Jones believes Callum Hawkins, who finished fourth at the World Championships, could be the man to finally end his long run as the British record holder. The 25-year-old Scot ran a personal best 2:10.17 to finish within 25 seconds of a bronze medal in London on Sunday as he equalled the highest place finish by a British athlete in the event. British team mates and Welsh duo Andrew Davies and Josh Griffiths came home in 31st and 39th respectively.

Swansea City head coach Paul Clement says “nothing has changed” regarding the on-going transfer saga of Gylfi Sigurdsson, who remains a summer target for Everton and Leicester City. Both the Toffees and the Foxes have had £40m bids rejected by the Swans, who have valued the Icelandic midfielder at £50m. Sigurdsson was not selected for the Swans’ friendly 4-0 win against Sampdoria on Saturday and the manager insists this is in the best interests of all concerned.
Dan Clements is going to be a busy man over the next week as he follows the fortunes of the Welsh international hockey teams in Cardiff and Glasgow. The women kick-off their EuroHockey II campaign on home turf at Sophia Gardens on Sunday, 5 August, while the men start their push for promotion north of the border. Both teams go into the tournaments on the back of some great recent results and Clements doesn’t want to miss a moment. “It’s going to be a busy week, that’s for sure. I’m in Cardiff for the opening game for the women against Austria and then up to Glasgow on Monday for three days,” said Clements, Head of performance at Welsh Hockey.
