Sam Warburton is to have an operation on his neck which looks likely to rule him out of most of this season. The British and Irish Lions captain has been suffering from a neck injury for a while, but the Cardiff Blues have revealed the problem was made worse during training this week and now Warburton is to undergo surgery.
Welsh golfer David Boote provided the best moment for the Great Britain & Ireland team as he beat the US Amateur champion in the Sunday singles in a Walker Cup hammering at the Los Angeles Country Club. The visitors were beaten 19-7 in a match that was tied at 2-2 after Saturday’s morning foursomes. The home side dominated that afternoon’s singles to open an 8-4 lead and then won Sunday’s foursomes 3-1 and the final singles matches 8-2.

Thankfully, both were Challenge Cup fixtures and Devils have not suffered major damage by losing against Flames. There is […]
After the daylight trauma of their opening home game against Leinster, the Dragons now re-appear under the cover of night to host Connacht on Friday. Geraint Powell says darkness has always served rugby well in Gwent . . . and can do so again. Whisper it ever so quietly – for you don’t want to risk sarcastic comments from the direction of Carmarthenshire about not needing any daylight, for the only “passing” in Gwent was when the ball went to the back of a driving maul – but top flight rugby in the eastern region has always been best played at dusk, or better still, in the dark. Abertillery Park and Pontypool Park may be two of the most beautiful natural amphitheatres in Welsh club rugby but, in rugby terms, the stuff played there was not always renowned as beautiful and both banks were best viewed from the stands at the other side in an evening match.
Full-back Cameron Pring has committed to Merthyr Town for another month. Championship club Bristol City have agreed Pring, who has played for the Martyrs in all seven of their matches this season, can continue his development at the Loadlok Community Stadium. Melissa Courtney was supposed to provide the lead for the bigger names to use to drag them to a good time at the Great City Games in Newcastle, but the Welsh middle distance ace gave her rivals more than they bargained for. Instead of setting the pace for everyone else and then slipping down the field, she gritted her teeth, stayed in the hunt and then stormed to victory in 4 min, 33.83 sec. It was a stunning way for her to complete a great season and the victory will have given her chances of going to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games next year a huge boost.
Welsh duo Jack Davidson and David Boote are helping Great Britain & Ireland defend the Walker Cup in the 49th edition of the trans-Atlantic tournament at the Los Angeles Country Club, Beverly Hills, California this weekend. Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has suggested the club let Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente go once it became clear their “focus was elsewhere”. Without naming either player, Jenkins has outlined the reasons why both of the club’s biggest stars of last season were sold in last month’s transfer window.

Ospreys coach Steve Tandy admitted his team’s “brutal” defeat to Glasgow is already putting pressure on them to stay with the Guinness Pro14 Conference leaders. The high-flying Scots handed out a 31-10 drubbing at Scotstoun and Tandy admitted pace-setters Glasgow and Munster are already opening up a gap on the Ospreys who have taken four points from two games.
Cardiff Blues assistant coach Matt Sherratt has claimed they should be “proud” of all but the last 11 minutes of their 37-9 hammering at Leinster. The Blues conceded three tries in those final stages in Dublin on Friday night, but in a remarkably upbeat assessment of their display, Danny Wilson’s right-hand man has insisted they should puff out their chests at the fact they were only losing 16-9 before the wheels came off.
