Wales have a new kit. It’s red. So, that’s the fashionistas sorted. And young traditionalists don’t need to worry, either, because it’s still got a great big sponsors’ logo on the chest. Dai Sport reckons it looks okay – like a Wales rugby jersey should look. We don’t begin to understand the marketing guff (something about hills on your shoulders) but we’ve patriotically reproduced the WRU press release, anyway, for anyone who can work it out. Oh, and the replica is 65 quid. The new Wales kit for the next two seasons of international rugby was revealed for the first time today by global sports performance and innovation brand Under Armour. Inspired by the Welsh national anthem ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ (Land of my Fathers), Under Armour’s new design is intrinsically linked to the Welsh landscape, using the topography of unique areas around the country mapped out on the shoulders with subtle stitching.
Steff Evans is likely to be the beneficiary from George North’s latest injury which has ruled the Northampton wing out of Wales’ autumn series. Scarlets wing Evans has been knocking on the international door for 12 months, but had to wait until the summer before winning his first caps against Tonga and Samoa whilst North was on Lions duty. With North now due to be ruled out for the whole of November due to a knee problem, then 23-year-old Evans will be the favourite to take one of the wing spots for the Tests against Australia, Georgia, New Zealand and South Africa, with Liam Williams and Leigh Halfpenny likely to fill the other back three positions.
Andrew Lord is delighted to have a week off from matches. Cardiff Devils head coach needed time with players in training and said: “It’s great to be back in practice mode.” Devils won 3-2 at Coventry Blaze in their latest match and kept alive hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages. They must win their […]
Elliot Richards scored a magnificent goal for Merthyr Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium in Weymouth, but his team still slumped to a 3-2 defeat. Caerphilly-born former Wales under-21 international Richards smashed a fierce shot home just after the hour. He fired just inside the angle of post and bar from 30 yards. “That was […]
Newport County signed a new striker, but then crashed to a home defeat with a former Exiles defender scoring a crucial goal. Experienced forward Paul Hayes joined County, while Ryan Jackson netted for Colchester United in a 2-1 win for the Essex club. Frenchman Mikael Mandron was the other U’s scorer, while Shawn McCoulsky was […]

The 23-year-old scored on his NHL debut, in a 6-1 win against Montreal Canadiens and his achievement has been hailed throughout Australia, where he grew up, and North America. […]

Anthony Pilkington, aged 29, joined the party when he fired a second half equaliser for Cardiff City in this Premier Development League Two match. Wales will face France in a friendly in Paris next month, the Football Association of Wales announced on Tuesday. Chris Coleman’s side missed out on a place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia after finishing third in their qualifying group, their final game ending in a 1-0 defeat by Ireland.
Newport County fans are dreaming of making an impact in the Emirates FA Cup, while manager Michael Flynn will insist: “Forget all about it.” The Exiles have been drawn at home against League One Walsall in the first round, but they play Colchester United at home this evening and are focused on that test alone. […]
Penarth 2-0 Ashmoor After the disappointment of defeat against neighbours Cardiff & Met the previous weekend, Penarth’s 1st XI were well aware that their next fixture against early-season table-toppers Ashmoor would be an equally formidable one, but the Bears were determined to rise to the challenge and, in doing so, preserve their remarkable unbeaten run […]
Caryl Jones threw her name into the hat for Commonwealth Games marathon selection with a brilliant debut over the 26.2 mile distance in Amsterdam as she ran third fastest time ever recorded by a Welsh woman. Her finishing time of 2:34.16 was well inside the ‘A’ standard for the Gold Coast of 2:37.00 and earned her 11th place in the women’s race in one of the fastest marathons of the year.
Warren Gatland has defended his Lions training methods and claimed he helped get Sean O’Brien into the “best shape of his life”. The Wales coach has responded for the first time to criticism from Ireland and Lions flanker O’Brien that training routines were overdone in the build-up to the first Test against New Zealand this summer and that the tourists should have gone on to win rather than draw the series.
The future of Cardiff Arms Park is still less clear than the contents of a Clark’s Pie. Rob Cole peers under the crust and says there is plenty to chew on, but one side has to be prepared to swallow hard. Ever since Richard Holland took over as the chief executive at Cardiff Blues just over six years ago his in-tray has been dominated by one issue – the re-development of Cardiff Arms Park. Seen as the way to inject much needed cash into the ailing Blues, plans for a £150m regeneration scheme cannot move forward unless the Cardiff Athletic Club agrees to assign the lease on the Arms Park to the Blues for the next 150 years.
Wales coach Warren Gatland believes Rhys Webb may decide to back out of his move to France in order to keep playing for Wales. Webb will become the biggest casualty of the Welsh Rugby Union’s new selection policy which will permit players outside of Wales, only if they have 60 caps or are already there under contract. The change, announced on Monday, means Webb will no longer be eligible for selection if he goes ahead with his planned move from the Ospreys to Toulon as he only has 28 caps.
Newport County have hit a rich vein of form and are intent on stepping up the pace even more. They have earned back-to-back wins, kept successive clean sheets and are in the League Two top six. Colchester United are visitors to Rodney Parade on Tuesday (7.45pm) before Mansfield Town arrive in South Wales this Saturday. […]
Merthyr Town are intent on showing they are genuine promotion challengers over their next four fixtures. The Martyrs spluttered when they suffered back-to-back Southern League defeats against Kettering and Slough, but hit back in style in a 5-0 home win against Gosport Borough. Manager Gavin Williams travel to Weymouth on Tuesday and then go to […]
Wales’s most successful rally driver, David Llewellin, is tipping his fellow countryman Elfyn Evans for great success – and even an historic victory – on this month’s eagerly-awaited Dayinsure Wales Rally GB (26-29 October). Although a number of Welsh co-drivers have won Britain’s classic round of the FIA World Rally Championship, no Welsh driver has ever stood on the podium let alone won their home event.
Tammy Abraham will need to confound recent trends and statistics if he is ever to become a Chelsea regular, but his Swansea teammate Leon Britton believes the striker can re-write history. All the evidence shows that home-grown talent loaned out from Stamford Bridge generally find they knock but are not gained entry when they bid to make the Premier League champions’ first team.
Coventry Blaze 2, Cardiff Devils 3 Andrew Lord hailed a ‘huge’ Cardiff Devils win against Coventry Blaze at the Skydome in Coventry. Devils had to win if they were to keep their Challenge Cup hopes alive and they clawed out a win thanks to a performance full of character and courage. Patrick Asselin and Joey […]
