The duo, who have both been in excellent recent form, are fine-tuning their preparations to participate in the 20k walk on Australia’s Gold Coast with some warm weather training in Spain, while the rest of Wales experiences sub-zero temperatures.
Leon Britton is ready to ride to the rescue for Swansea City – again – with a comeback against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup. The veteran midfielder has not played since October 21 but has recovered from a pelvic injury and could return in Tuesday night’s fifth round replay at the Liberty Stadium. Swans manager Carlos Carvalhal revealed Britton has been training fully with the rest of the squad and may be eased back against the Championship club, before the crucial 10-match Premier League run-in.

Wales and the Celtic Dragons have plugged the gap left by Trish Wilcox by appointing Australian Julie Hoornweg as their new coach. Hoornweg will take charge of the Dragons for the remainder of their Netball Superleague season and also oversee the national team as they head towards the Commonwealth Games in April. A former head coach with England, Hoornweg has a tough task on her hands with Wales recently failing to qualify for the 2019 World Cup and the Dragons yet to win a game this season.
Tom Marshall got a taste of the strength of the competition he will face at the Commonwealth Games when he finished sixth over 1500 metres at the Muller Indoor Grand Prix, behind two Kenyans and an Aussie. The consolation for the rapidly improving Cardiff AAC middle distance runner was another PB with which to end his brief indoor season and fact he was the best placed Brit in the field a week after striking bronze at the British Championships. Marshall is off to the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast in April.
Natalie Powell hit back from her disappointment at the Paris Grand Slam to pick up a bronze medal at the Dusseldorf event to earn GB Judo their second medal. The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist reached No.1 status in the world in the 78kg category in December after striking gold in Abu Dhabi and went into the Dusseldorf Grand Slam at the ISS Dome as the top seed. She received a bye in the opening round and was then in fine form throughout the day. She comfortably despatched her early round opponents, beating local favourite Maike Ziech in her opening contest.
Commonwealth Games-bound Dewi Griffiths was forced to abort his attempt to win a magnificent seventh consecutive Welsh Cross Country title in Swansea on Saturday. The Swansea Harrier pulled up as a precaution halfway around the picturesque Singleton Park course after suffering from “stiffness”, said his coach Kevin Evans afterwards. “It’s just a bit of stiffness he’s got, that’s all,” explained Evans. “I’m sure he’ll be sorted out in a couple of days.”
