Neil Warnock praised the fighting spirit of his Cardiff City promotion chasers after they rescued another lost cause with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United. The Bluebirds manager voiced his admiration after Anthony Pilkington snatched a point with a dramatic equaliser deep into injury time at Bramall Lane. As on numerous other occasions in this Championship season, this Cardiff side simply refuse to acknowledge when they are beaten and summon up a resilience to gain reward.

Team Wales have been forced to make one change to each of their men’s and women’s hockey squads for the Commonwealth Games which start on Thursday. Meirion Evans got his Peugeot 208 Rally Cup campaign off to a good start when he finished 11th on the opening round of the series, the Rallye Terre des Causses, in southwest France. After two years competing in the British Junior Rally Championship, the 22-year old Carmarthen driver is keen to gain more international experience and has thrown himself into the ultra competitive single-make French series this year, where everyone competes in identical front-wheel drive Peugeot 208 R2 machines. The seven round 208 Cup has one of the biggest prizes in European rallying, with a cash prize fund of nearly €20,000 per event and the 2018 champion receiving a factory drive in the 2019 French Rally Championship in the PSA Group’s newest rally car, a Citroën C3R5. Co-driven by Jonathan Jackson from St Asaph, Evans had to battle for all of day one with bent steering – fighting his Chazel Technologie Course team prepared 208 R2 that wanted to pull to the right all of the time. Against drivers from France, Switzerland, Belgium, Finland, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa, Evans fought back on day two to post some very respectable stage times and just miss out of a top 10 finish.

Phil Mills, the 2003 World Rally Champion Co-driver, will come out of retirement to co-drive for Elfyn Evans on next weekend’s Tour of Corsica (5-8 April). With Evans’ regular co-driver Daniel Barritt needing more time to recover from the sixth-gear roll the pair suffered at the previous FIA World Rally Championship round in Mexico, the 29-year old Dolgellau driver was left searching for a replacement. Mills is massively experienced, having guided Petter Solberg to 13 WRC victories and the 2003 world title. The 54-year old’s last WRC event was in 2010, but he has kept very much involved in rallying – running his own very successful historic rally car preparations firm, Viking Motorsport, from its base in Newtown. More importantly, Mills has also been helping Evans behind the scenes as part of his WRC gravel crew for the past five years, and thus knows his fellow Welshman’s pacenote system inside out.
