Gareth Evans Gives Wales Lift-Off With First Gold At The Games

Gareth Evans has bagged Wales’ first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games with a magnificent display in the weightlifting. The 32-year-old won the 69kg category in his third Games at the Carrara Sports Centre on the Gold Coast in Australia. The Holyhead lifter finished with a total of 299kg after a snatch of 136kg and clean and jerk of 163kg.

Allen Clarke In Line For Ospreys Head Coach Upgrade

The Ospreys are considering upgrading Allen Clarke and making him their permanent head coach. Northern Irishman Clarke has been in charge at the region as interim coach since the departure of Steve Tandy in January. Welsh women’s sport will be tested to the full in two ‘David v Goliath’ clashes against England on Friday. First up it will be Leah Wilkinson’s Welsh hockey side in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and then Sophie Ingle’s footballers will face a top of the table World Cup qualifying clash at St Mary’s, Southampton. Both English teams are ranked as the second best teams in the world and in both sports they are expected to go on and challenge for the title. Sammy Lee Is Already One Punch From Commonwealth Glory For Wales

Wales’ teenage boxing sensation Sammy Lee is one win away from bagging a Commonwealth medal on his Games debut at the Gold Coast. A gold medallist at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas last July, the Swansea fighter is looking to step up in class Down Under and has been drawn straight through to the quarter-finals in the -81kg category. It means he will have to wait until Wednesday, 11 April, for his opening bout – the last appearance at the Games of the seven strong Welsh team. But it also means he is only one win away from a guaranteed bronze medal with a semi-final spot.

James Ball hopes winning Wales’ first medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia can inspire the rest of his team. Para-cyclist Ball won Wales’ first honour of the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast when he took silver in the men’s B&VI 1,000m time trial along with his guide Pete Mitchell. The duo finished nearly a second behind Scotland’s Neil Fachie, who was piloted by Matt Rotherham, but more than half-a-second ahead of Aussie Brad Henderson and Tom Clarke.
