Cardiff Met will shoot for the biggest title in their history when they take on reigning champions Hartpury in the final of the BUCS Super Rugby Championship at Twickenham on Wednesday. Now in its second season, the BUCS Super Rugby competition features the top nine universities in England and Wales. Next season the number will grow to 10 with Cardiff University joining the elite tier. The Archers have won the BUCS Championship in the past, along with Welsh and British Colleges crowns, but the game at Twickenham is a step up. They finished third in the league and then beat Loughborough and Bath University in the play-offs to go all the way to Twickenham.
Rosie Eccles is relishing a good old-fashioned Wales v England dust-up with a gold medal at stake at the Commonwealth Games. Welsh boxer Eccles is through to the final of the women’s 69kg boxing, where she will face familiar foe Sandy Ryan of England. The two fighters met three years ago, when Ryan emerged as the winner. Eccles, 21, who fits out of the Pontypool boxing club, won her semi-final against Kaye Scott of Australia and can now become Commonwealth champion if she beats Ryan on Saturday.
Daniel Jervis and Georgia Davies are both targeting more success this year after finishing their Commonwealth Games efforts with hard earned medals for Wales. Part-time painter and decorator Jervis brushed up on his bronze medal in Glasgow four years ago, by taking silver in the men’s 1500m freestyle. Davies claimed a bronze in the women’s 50m backstroke – her third successive Commonwealth medal in three Games for a competitor who always delivers for Wales.

A 2-0 defeat against South Africa has left them struggling to finish in the top two in Pool A, but they could still finish third if they can beat Malaysia. The two teams played out a 0-0 draw in Glasgow four years ago and Wilkinson is hoping for better in the return game. “We were really disappointed with the result against South Africa, although the fact the we’re all so upset shows how far we’ve come as we were facing a team ranked 14th in the world,” said Wilkinson.

The Welsh Rugby Union’s plan for an alcohol-free trial at Wales matches will take place in a section of the Principality Stadium where there are no bars. The Union have announced the experiment of no booze in a designated area will be tried – in a section behind the posts in the oldest part of the stadium – at this year’s autumn internationals against Scotland, Australia, Tonga and South Africa. The move comes after growing dissatisfaction from fans over disturbance and the worsening atmosphere inside the stadium, leading to a Dai Sport campaign for change.
