Cardiff Blues coach John Mulvihill is planning to use Samu Manoa and Nick Williams as a 40-stones twin-turbo power boost next season. Having signed 20-stone USA No.8 Manoa from Toulon for the new season, the new Blues coach intends to rotate his physical threat with that of fellow bruising No.8 Nick Williams. They may have a combined age of 67 – Manoa is 33 and Williams turns 35 in December – but Mulvihill believes the threat they can carry between them for 80 minutes will prove a fearful proposition for opponents in the Guinness Pro14 and European Champions Cup next season.
Welsh Netball is entering a busy recruitment phase with a new coach for the Celtic Dragons at the top of the agenda. The departure of Aussie ace Julie Hoornweg at the end of the Super League season created the vacancy and “a competitive” salary is being promised to anyone who can help turn around the fortunes of the Dragons.

There was no golden hat-trick for Jake Heyward this summer as he battled to finish just outside the medals in the 1500 metres final at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Tampere. The Cardiff University student had hoped to follow up his European Youth U18 title for the metric mile in 2016, and his Euro Junior success last year in Grosseto, with a third medal in Finland, but in a stacked race he had to settle for fourth place in 3.43.76 – the fourth fastest time of his career.

There are less than 500 tickets left for Cardiff City’s pre-season match against Taffs Well at Rhiw Darr on Friday (7pm). More than 2,500 have already been sold and the fixture is expected to be a sell-out. Bluebirds manager Neil Warnock has pledged that all of his senior players, probably with the exception of Aron […]
Wayne Pivac will be the new Warren Gatland, but who will step into Rob Howley’s shoes? Robin Davey says it should be Stephen Jones and believes the Wales coaching succession plan could have gone further. Even though the Welsh Rugby Union have rightly won universal praise for their forward planning in appointing Wayne Pivac as the next Wales coach, they have missed a trick. Why not go further and appoint Scarlets legend and Pivac’s lieutenant Stephen Jones as backs/attack coach at the same time?
Nine Welsh athletes have been named in the Great Britain team for the World Para Athletics European Championships in Germany next month. The team heading to Berlin includes a trio of Welsh world champions in the shape of Olivia Breen, Hollie Arnold and Aled Davies. Walter’s Arena, in the beautiful Vale of Neath, was alive with the sound of Polaris RZRs, QT Wildcats, Kirkland Protos and other crazy off-road machines that you might well have never heard of before – but it’s a spectacular sport and in the end it was Paul Rowlands and co-driver Andrew Smith who triumphed on the Welsh Hill Rally in their rapid Can Am X3, after three days of teeth-rattling competition. Dan Lofthouse/Tony Coid led initially, holding a slight advantage over Peter Roberts/Anthony Brinkman, with Ian Rochelle/Chris Hammond in third place in their Rivet. Day two was the longest of the event, and it proved to be challenging for many crews. Despite suffering a puncture on the first stage of the day, Lofthouse continued to lead. By the end of the day Steve Hiatt/Ian McMahon had moved up to second in their Warrior, 44 seconds behind Lofthouse with Roberts in third, 11 seconds further back.
Elfyn Evans will be one of the big stars at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, as a motorsport ‘who’s who’ gather at Lord March’s country estate for the biggest automotive garden party in the world. Ahead of the Pimm’s and petrol-fueled weekend, Evans spent a couple of days last week tearing around Goodwood in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC to create a special video for Red Bull. Picture the scene – the 29-year old professional rally driver from Dolgellau is stuck in a traffic jam near Goodwood and is running late for the forest stage start. Undeterred, Evans jumps into his 2018-spec rally machine and, guided by co-driver Dan Barritt, powers his way around, and occasionally straight through, hazards and obstacles in an attempt to arrive on time!
Tom Cave will contest his first rally of 2018 when he blasts off the start line on this Saturday’s Nicky Grist Stages. The 26-year old driver from Aberdovey has been seeded at number one in a Spencer Sport team-run Mitsubishi Mirage R5. Co-driven by Hirwaun’s James Morgan, the event will see the Welsh pair back in action for the first time since last October’s Wales Rally GB, when they finished an impressive third in the WRC2 category driving a Fiesta R5.
Welsh distance runners Dewi Griffiths and Matthew Rees have taken part in an experiment which took them as far from their natural running environment as it is possible to imagine. Griffiths’ routine training runs take him along the tracks and lanes around the family farm in Llanfynydd, surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of the beautiful rural Carmarthenshire countryside. Even when competing, Griffiths’ senses would generally be assaulted by the colours, noises and atmosphere generated by crowds either lining road race streets, cross country courses or filling the stands at track stadiums.
