Cai Devine is ready to follow Sam Cross from obscurity to Test stardom for Wales – starting with the Rugby World Cup Sevens this weekend. Devine is a Singapore-born Durham University student who will be part of the Wales squad competing in San Francisco and aiming to emulate the Welsh world champions of 2009. But Sevens success could also bring further personal opportunity as it did for Cross who went on to win an Olympic silver medal in Brazil in 2016, before that proved a springboard to a shock Wales cap in the 15-a-side game last year.
Wales’ first Winter Olympic medallist, Laura Deas, has been appointed to the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) Athlete Commission as it seeks to strengthen the athlete voice within anti-doping. The British skeleton bronze medallist joins multiple British weightlifting champion Jo Calvino, 50m backstroke world record holder Liam Tancock, and ex-Gloucester rugby lock James Hudson in taking up two-year terms on the commission. The appointments come a month after the inaugural World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Global Athlete Forum, at which athletes, including UKAD Athlete Commission members Ali Jawad and Callum Skinner, called for a stronger athlete voice within anti-doping.
Excitement is building among the South Wales Warriors who can take a giant step towards securing their division title when they host the Torbay Trojans on Sunday. Joe Burns was getting ready for the Australian cricket summer with Queensland when he got the call from his manager to fly to Wales to deputise for injured compatriot Shaun Marsh in Glamorgan’s 11 remaining matches of their Vitality T20 Blast campaign. The right-handed middle-order international batsman looks set to make his debut when Somerset arrive in Sophia Gardens on Friday night, having had just a few days to prepare.
Geraint Thomas gave telling evidence he could yet out-last Chris Froome and win the Tour de France after claiming Stage 12 for back-to-back victories. The Welshman who won Stage 11 yesterday followed that up with an even more impressive triumph in the mountains as he increased his lead in the yellow jersey. Thomas admitted he didn’t really believe he could win at the legendary Alpe d’Huez and again insisted that defending champion Froome was still team leader.
Oli McBurnie can enjoy a breakthrough season for Swansea City in the Championship, believes new manager Graham Potter. McBurnie made 12 appearances for the Swans in the Premier League last season, but was unable to establish himself as a first choice striker under either Paul Clement or Carlos Carvalhal. Evans heads the 130 car field in a Fiesta WRC, on what will be his first appearance on a Northern Ireland special stage since the 2009 Circuit of Ireland. With 15 World Rally Cars, more than a dozen highly modified class B14 cars and a sprinkling of powerful R5 cars on the entry list, victory for the experienced Llanwrda driver (co-driven by Mark Glennerster) will not be easily achieved. One of his main rivals will come from Builth Wells, as Pritchard attempts to retake the lead of the Protyre MSA Asphalt Rally Championship. Geraint Thomas will play a waiting game with team-mate Chris Froome as the pair resume the Tour de France with a potentially epic ride up Alpe d’Huez laying ahead. Welshman Thomas stormed to a magnificent stage victory on Wednesday and grabbed the yellow jersey in a thrilling Stage 11. On the day Thomas’s old Whitchurch High School pal Sam Warburton announced his retirement from rugby – leading to a message of congratulations from another school buddy, Gareth Bale – the Cardiff rider took the first summit finish of the race.
Teenage rally star Tom Llewellin finished fourth in class and 46th overall (out of 113 starters) after a great drive on his first ever gravel rally. The 17-year old Pembrokeshire driver, son of double British Rally Champion Dai Llewellin, contested the Nicky Grist Stages at the wheel of a Peter Gwynne Motorsport Suzuki Swift. Co-driven by Dale Bowen, the reigning MSA Junior Rallycross champion emerged from a very hot and dusty opening stage sixth in class and 64th overall, and from there worked his way up the leaderboard in impressive style.
