Wales confirmed their status as the comeback kings as they wiped out a 2-1 deficit to beat the Czech Republic 3-2 at the EuroHockey Youth Championships II to reach the semi-finals. It means Wales U18 head coach Lee Ible’s side will be battling for promotion to the top tier when they meet the Russians in the final four at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on Friday – a big change from fighting to avoid relegation last time out.
Swansea University’s commitment to sporting excellence has been given a major boost by becoming the first institution in Wales to be awarded TASS Dual Career Accreditation. Already the only establishment outside England to be awarded the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) approval, Swansea is leading the way in Wales by supporting talented athletes in education.
Andrew Lord is pumped for the new ice hockey season and says: “It’s going to be one heck of a ride.” Cardiff Devils coach Lord, now back in Cardiff after spending time in North America, is setting his team major European and domestic targets during 2018-19. He wants his Devils team to progress through the […]
Neil Warnock wants Liverpool midfield player Marko Grujic to link up with Cardiff City before their home pre-season friendly against Real Betis. The Bluebirds manager spoke to Grujic on Tuesday, while he has also been chatting to Julian Ward, Liverpool’s loan pathways and football partnerships manager. Warnock remains ‘optimistic’ that Serbian international Grujic will rejoin […]
Swansea City manager Graham Potter insists Andre Ayew’s deal to move to Fenerbahce is part of the “re-structure” of the club. Ghanaian striker Ayew has joined the Turkish club on a one-year loan deal, just six months after the Swans paid a club record £18m for him and handed out a three-and-a-half year contract. He is part of £33.5m worth of striking talent the club have sent out on loan, following Borja Baston’s move to Spanish side Alaves.
The Guinness Pro 14 fixtures are out and it’s a time for new hopes and dreams. Robin Davey says for the Dragons, though, it is far more. The scheduled matches have given them an opportunity they cannot afford to squander. The Dragons have been handed a golden opportunity to finally rise from the ashes and at last make some kind of impression in the Guinness Pro 14 league table. Aside from the first season of regional rugby when, under the guidance of Mike Ruddock, the Dragons finished third and even had a chance of winning the title, they have been very much the poor relations.
The New Saints continue their European campaign tonight looking to build on the momentum gained from last week’s emphatic 4-0 victory over KF Shkendija (7.00). Gibraltar-based Lincoln Red Imps visit Park Hall in the latest European test for the Welsh Premier League side. The Saints have been forced to turn their attentions to Europa League […]
James Waite, a Welsh teenager with bags of ability, made the step up to Bluebirds first team football in South Yorkshire last night. More than 200 City fans travelled to the New York Stadium and Waite, one of the brightest prospects at under-23 level, made the most of his opportunity during a 2-1 Cardiff City […]
Geraint Thomas insists he is not thinking about winning the Tour de France despite another emphatic performance on the final summit finish of the race. The Cardiff-born rider took a massive step towards producing one of – if not the finest achievement by a Welsh athlete.
Mid Wales racing driver Ben Power made a successful return to the UK National Legends Car Championship with MRF Tyres, scoring two race wins in the latest rounds at Donington Park in Derbyshire. Power, aged 28, from Guilsfield, near Welshpool, had not raced since April, due to work commitments and getting married.
The organisers of the brand new Superprix of Wales, which will take place at Parc y Scarlets next summer, are aiming to attract some of the biggest names in motorsport as they bring Formula 1, Le Mans, British Touring, Rallycross and World Rally cars to Llanelli in 2019. The motorsports extravaganza will run for three days, between 7-9 June, on a specially designed course that will see cars power around the perimeter and then through the middle of the stadium. It promises to be an action packaged, high-octane show, with demonstrations, exhibitions, displays, a motor show, trade stands and a food village – and an opportunity to view some of motorsport’s most iconic cars close up, and meet the star drivers.
Wales Under 18s are one win away from clinching a semi-final berth in the EuroHockey Youth Championships II on home soil. Lee Ible’s team followed up their epic late comeback against Scotland, where they secured a draw after being three goals down, with a convincing 2-0 victory over Switzerland at Sophia Gardens. A win over the Czech Republic on Wednesday evening (6.00pm) would see them safely through to the final four.
Jay Fulton is hoping a change of manager will lead to a revival in his opportunities at Swansea City this season. The Swans midfielder played in the club’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Spanish club Eibar on Tuesday night in Austria. It was the 24-year-old Scot’s latest pre-season action as he bids to convince new manager Graham Potter he can be a first team regular – a status he failed to achieve under both Paul Clement and Carlos Carvalhal.
Stephen Dixon is the third new face to join the Devils as they prepare to defend their Elite League and play-off titles. Forward Dixon played the last two seasons in Germany’s top league (DEL) for Grizzlys Wolfsburg, playing in 52 games last season, scoring five goals and 14 assists. He added another three goals and […]
Geraint Thomas has admitted Stage 17 could make or break his bid to become the first Welshman to win the Tour De France. The Team Sky rider will wear the yellow jersey on a brutal 65km route that includes four long ascents over three mountain passes and will require two hours of solid climbing. If Thomas is to crack – as he has at times before on previous tours, although always in the service of team leaders – then this is the stage where his rivals will bid to make it happen again.
Eight Welsh athletes have been named in the Great Britain team heading for the European Athletics Championships next month. The Welsh contingent is the highest since the 1986 Europeans in Stuttgart and double the number selected for the last championships held in Holland two years ago.
Welsh rugby fans will have no weekly free-to-air English langauge coverage of the Guinness Pro14 next season. Welsh language broadcaster S4C have announced they have agreed a new three-year deal for the tournament, but they have been stopped from providing a red button English commentary service as in past years. With BBC Wales having lost the live rights to Premier Sports and having failed to agree any deal for a Scrum V highlights programme, it means there will be no regular English language free output.
Graeme Thomas is seeking redemption at the European Rowing Championships in Glasgow next month – just two years after a virus left his dreams of a medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in tatters. The 29-year-old was due to race in the men’s quadruple sculls but flew back from Rio without being able to train, let alone compete.
After a six-week summer break, Elfyn Evans is revved up and ready for the start of the second half of the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship at this weekend’s Rally Finland. The event is famous for its super-fast and smooth gravel roads that contain massive high-speed jumps, which send cars flying for 40 metres or more. It’s no surprise that Finland is Evans’ favourite rally outside his home Wales Rally GB, and the 29-year old M-Sport team driver from Dolgellau has done well there in the past, finishing an impressive second last year. Co-driven by Daniel Barritt, Evans will be hoping that the second half of the series will be better than a somewhat frustrating first, in which his speed in his EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta WRC has only truly been rewarded once, with second place in Portugal. If he can get through Friday’s opening day without a puncture or mishap, you get the feeling another very good result could be on the cards.
There will be an explosive start to the Guinness PRO14 season when the reigning European Rugby Challenge Cup champions Cardiff Blues host the Champions Cup and PRO14 winners Leinster. The Friday night shoot-out at the Arms Park on 31 August will give new Blues coach John Mulvihill the toughest of starts, but with Leinster unlikely to have their leading Irish internationals available so early in the season it might be a slightly easier task than later in the campaign.
