Ben Bowns was brutally honest in his assessment of Cardiff Devils’ latest venture into Europe. The visitors powered into a 4-0 lead within 25 minutes before captain Jake Morissette and his players hit back with […]

Jayne Ludlow believes Wales can take what should rightfully already be theirs on Friday night – the scalp of England. There may be far more at stake than an ancient rivalry, with World Cup qualification on the line, but the woman who has transformed both the results and the reputation of the national side is also eager for some just deserts. Back in April, Wales drew 0-0 with England in Southampton – a game notable for a gritty, backs-to-the-wall defensive display by Ludlow’s team, particularly goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan, but also for a goal-line decision that went against the visitors.
Luke Rowe has been forced to bring his season to a premature end after breaking a wrist bone at the European Championships in Glasgow. The Team Sky rider suffered the injury during the road race on August 12 after clipping his hand on a barrier.

Wales’ Tour de France champion and Chris Froome – who, between them, hold all three Grand Tour titles – are on the longlist for both the men’s road race and the time trial. The road race squad also includes twins Simon and Adam Yates and British national champion Connor Swift.
Gareth Bale’s Real Madrid renaissance proves he has the character to be a future captain of Wales, according to his former international colleague Simon Davies. Bale was seemingly inching towards the exit door at the Bernabeu before scoring twice in Real’s Champions League final victory against Liverpool in May. Instead, manager Zinedine Zidane and team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo left Madrid after that triumph and Bale has since played a pivotal part under new boss Julen Lopetegui, scoring in Real’s opening two LaLiga wins.
The launch of the 2018-19 Principality Premiership took place at The Wern, the home of defending champions Merthyr RFC, on Wednesday evening – with the stress on entertainment as never before. As well as players and coaches from the 16 participating teams, the Welsh Rugby Union leadership were there in force including chief executive Martyn Phillips and several elected directors. Merthyr head coach Dale McIntosh believes the exposure of weekly live TV for the Premiership for the first team has put a responsibility on clubs to serve up rugby that excites.
It will be a season of transition at Cardiff Blues, no longer able to call on Sam Warburton and no longer coached by Danny Wilson. Robin Davey suggests, however, that their upward trend may well continue after some notable recruits and an increasing strength in key positions. Cardiff Blues finally delivered last season, when, after years in the wilderness, they ended the season in a blaze of glory by winning the European Challenge Cup final. The challenge for the new season will be to build on that, particularly in the Guinness Pro 14. And new head coach John Mulvihill admits expectations will be high as a result of their European success.
Cardiff Devils are addicted to winning – and they are determined to feed their trophy habit again in 2018-19. Their new season starts on Thursday when Austrians Red Bull Salzburg, one of the best and most powerful teams in Europe, come to Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay. Hal Robson-Kanu – the striker who scored one of Wales’ greatest goals in the country’s history – has retired from international football. The West Brom forward, who is still only 29, confirmed his decision after being left out of the squad announced by manager Ryan Giggs on Wednesday. Robson-Kanu will forever be remembered for the “Cruyff turn” and shot into a Belgian net on the unforgettable night of Wales’ 3-1 victory at the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 in France.
Tom James is fit and firing again after a difficult period and has a Guinness PRO14 landmark dangling in front of him as the new season gets set for the big kick-off this weekend. The seven-times capped Wales wing is already out on his own as the leading Welsh try scorer in the PRO14 with 45 for Cardiff Blues. He also scored three Premiership tries while playing for Exeter Chiefs during his two season sojourn in England.
The Welsh rugby season begins on Friday night, but it’s been another summer of re-shaping, re-hashing and re-heating the menu on offer. Geraint Powell says the Principality Premiership has been squeezed, but the clubs do have a showcase opportunity which they must seize. It’s not easy being a Welsh Rugby Union senior executive. We can all complain about the state of the flawed professional regional game – the underlying root cause of nearly all of the problems in the whole pyramid – but, if a majority of the policy-making WRU board is not prepared to spend big to properly reorganise the tier once and for all, we are where we are.
Graham Potter has insisted he wants Nathan Dyer, Wayne Routledge and Luciano Narsingh to stay at Swansea City – even though all three look surplus to requirements. None of the experienced trio featured in the squad for Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace, which ended the Swans’ interest in the Carabao Cup at their first tie. The club would like to get all three off their wage bill and will encourage any interested parties to take any of them before Friday’s loan transfer deadline.
Neil Warnock revealed his thinking for Sunday’s Premier League home clash with Arsenal after Cardiff City’s disappointing 3-1 Carabao Cup home defeat against Norwich City. “The only major decision I had in my mind for Sunday I won’t be doing that now,” he said. “I more or less know what my team’s going to be […]
Newport County hopes of a lucrative Carabao Cup run were wrecked on a night when the Exiles, the Bluebirds and Swansea City crashed out of the competition. Manager Mike Flynn’s team lost 3-0 against League One Oxford United at Rodney Parade and the first two of their goals came inside the first four minutes. County […]
