Edwards Flies To Woodpecker Rally Victory

Matt Edwards and Darren Garrod scored their seventh rally win of what’s turning out to be an incredible season, with victory on the Eventsigns Woodpecker Stages Rally in their Swift Group Ford Fiesta R5. Their latest rally win secures the North Wales duo the Jordan Road Surfacing BTRDA Rally Series title. Two punctures, one on the fourth and the other on the seventh and final stage, didn’t prevent the Llysfaen driver winning the Ludlow-based event by 30 seconds, after a commanding performance.

Jayne Ludlow has promised Wales will build on their World Cup campaign – despite the breaking of the dam on Friday night when England secured their place at the tournament finals. Nine Pin Their Hopes on Woodpecker Rally Success

Nine drivers go into tomorrow’s Eventsigns Woodpecker Stages Rally with a chance of winning a free entry into the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB – the Road to Wales prize for leading the Pirelli MSA Welsh Rally Championship after the penultimate round of the series. The same nine drivers could also be crowned Welsh champion – although that won’t be decided until after the final round, the Wyedean Rally (10 November). Two drivers are currently tied at the top of the championship standings, with Llanon’s Dylan Davies and Surrey driver Wug Utting both on 107 points. Their respective co-drivers, Llion Williams and Bob Stokoe, also share the lead in the navigators’ category.

Grist Remembers First World Rally Championship Win – 25 Years After Victory On The 1993 Rally Of Argentina

It’s 25 years since Nicky Grist won his first FIA World Rally Championship event – co-driving for Juha Kankkunen on the 1993 Rally of Argentina in a Castrol Toyota Team Celica GT-Four ST185. The Ebbw Vale-born co-driver was drafted in at short notice when the Finnish driver’s regular navigator, Juha Piironen, suffered a brain haemorrhage at the team hotel in Villa Carlos Paz before the start. Grist was co-driving for German pilot Armin Schwarz in a Mitsubishi at the time, but with a limited WRC programme they released him from his contract to join Kankkunen for, initially, two events – Argentina and New Zealand.
