Jess Fishlock’s dream of playing football in France in 2019 will be realised after all – even if it won’t be with Wales at the Women’s World Cup. The 31-year-old midfielder has been loaned by parent club Seattle Reign to reigning European champions Olympic Lyonnais for the rest of the season, continuing the globetrotting exploits of Wales 100+ capped superstar.
Ben Llewellin has retained his status as British number one Olympic Skeet shooter after a very busy and highly successful season concluded last weekend with him winning the British Shooting Shotgun Grand Final for the second time in a row. The 24-year old Pembrokeshire marksman was the highest placed of the 12 competitors who went into the final, having won gold and two silvers in the three qualifying events. In wet, windy and difficult conditions at the Fauxdegla Shooting Ground near Wrexham, Llewellin shot an impressive 123 out of 125 targets in the heats, and then became British Champion for a second time with 56 out of 60 targets shot in an even more difficult final.
Cardiff & Met hockey midfield star Jacob Draper has once again been included in the Great Britain Under 21 squad for the Johor Cup in Malaysia. The 20-year-old Swansea University student helped the British team finish as runners-up in the prestigious tournament last year and will be hoping to go one better this time. He will be joined in the squad by his clubmate Callum Mackenzie, the Scottish Under 21 cap.
Andre Ayew has re-discovered his goal touch in Turkey after leaving Swansea City on loan. While the Swans struggle to find the net back home in the Championship, where they have gone three matches without scoring, Ayew has scored twice in three matches for Fenerbahce. The latest of those strikes came in the Instanbul derby on Tuesday night, when the Ghanaian striker grabbed the equaliser against Besiktas in a 1-1 draw.
Warren Gatland is still hoping “common-sense” will prevail before next year’s World Cup and the WRU will have a change of heart in making Rhys Webb available for the tournament. Now playing in the TOP 14 with Toulon, the British & Irish Lions scrum half became the first high profile player to fall foul of the new rule that stops players being eligible to play for Wales if they haven’t reached 60 caps and elect to join a club outside the country. But hot on the heels of Webb’s admission at the weekend that he still hopes to extend his 31-cap career despite being in exile in the south of France, Gatland admitted he “feels sorry for Rhys”.
By Paul Evans The Penrhiwllan-based Spencer Sport team is aiming to bring the Toyo Tires MSA British Rallycross Championship title back to Wales, after Julian Godfrey scored an emphatic victory at the penultimate round of the series at the Welsh Motorsports Centre, driving the team’s Mitsubishi Mirage RX Supercar. It was Godfrey’s third win of the season and it puts him in with a great chance of taking his sixth British Rallycross title, with only the final race meeting at Silverstone on Sunday 4 November remaining. Godfrey won Round 1 at Silverstone earlier this year and will need to repeat that victory, with championship rival Ollie O’Donovan (Ford Fiesta RX) finishing third or lower, to be assured of the title.
Jazz Carlin is taking a break from swimming and has not been included alongside Alys Thomas, Chloe Tutton, Georgia Davies, Kath Greenslade, Calum Jarvis and Daniel Jervis in British Swimming’s world class performance programme. The six Welsh swimmers are included but there is no place for Carlin, who will lose her funding as she recovers from recent illness and injury problems. The 27-year-old double Olympic silver medallist has struggled for form in the pool and her recent switch to open water competition has also not gone smoothly.

Stanford trailed fellow Briton Lucy Hall by just three seconds after the swim, with the rest of the chasing pack, Including Gentle, over a minute behind.
Greg Cunningham believes Cardiff City must show more tactical flexibility if they are to survive in the Premier League. The Ireland defender made his league debut for the Bluebirds on Saturday, but could not prevent Manchester City from inflicting Cardiff’s heaviest home defeat for 24 years with a 5-0 thrashing. The build-up had been dominated by reference to the physical nature of the clubs’ previous encounter back in January when Joe Bennett – who was left out of the weekend line-up as Cunningham gained selection – was sent off.

Scarlets coach Wayne Pivac believes his team are paying a painful price for their back row injury crisis. Last season’s Guinness Pro 14 finalists lost 33-20 at Connacht – their second defeat in their opening four matches – where they were outflanked without a specialist openside in their line-up. With James Davies heading up a lost list of injured flankers, Pivac admitted: “We’re hurt without a seven at the moment; it’s one of our strengths, slowing ball down and turning ball over. We weren’t able to do that today.
Graham Potter admits scoring goals has become a concern for Swansea City as their slide down the Championship table continues. Despite being rightly encouraged by a point at high-flying Middlesbrough on Saturday, the Swans manager has now presided over just one victory in their last seven games, during which they have scored just four goals. In fact, the latest stalemate – 0-0 at the Riverside Stadium – means Swansea have failed to find the net in their last three matches.
Canadian goals ace Mike Hedden scored two goals and was man of the match for Cardiff Devils in their 5-1 win against Coventry Blaze. “He has a great mix of speed, skill, intensity, energy and firepower,” said coach Andrew Lord. “It’s fun watching the guy. “Mike brings everything he has to the team, scored an […]
