While Ellis Jenkins waits to see a surgeon in London next week to discuss what happens to his injured knee, Cardiff Blues coach John Mulvihill is backing his skipper to be back in time to go to the World Cup next year. The Blues have admitted that Jenkins suffered “a significant knee injury” against the Springboks last weekend, and that “specialist reviews are needed to establish an accurate prognosis following surgery”, but no time frame has been put on his potential return.

A promising West Wales sailor will benefit from a new boat, thanks to the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST) and RYA OnBoard partnership.
 It means Pembrokeshire Performance Sailing Academy’s Rowan Joseph will have more people to race against next season as he gets a new Optimist boat that allows him to move up in class.


The injury to Ellis Jenkins was the only dark cloud to darken a golden autumn for Wales. But Robin Davey believes depth in key positions now makes Wales far less vulnerable to forced changes than in the recent past. The serious injury suffered by Wales and Cardiff Blues back rower Ellis Jenkins is harsh on a player who was really blossoming after a successful summer tour and a terrific performance against the Springboks. But it says a great deal for the depth which now exists that there’s a pretty long queue of players lining up to take his place.

Graham Potter admitted Swansea City have a weak underbelly after West Brom had exposed them at the Liberty Stadium where they suffered a second successive defeat. The Swans manager tried to put a brave face on things and talked about the “courage” shown by his side but when they needed to front up and defend corner kicks they were found wanting. Bethany Doga, of Llandudno sailing club, is one of a delighted dozen, from across the UK, that have been awarded exclusive use of their own boat for the next two years.  It will then go to their club for other junior sailors and windsurfers to continue to benefit from in the future.

Andy Davies is the new 2018 Welsh Road Rally Champion, having clinched the title on the penultimate round of the series, the recent Powys Lanes Rally, in his Subaru Impreza. It’s a title Davies, who lives in the village of Cribyn, near Lampeter, has wanted ever since he took up rallying, with plans for a proper attempt at the series hatched over a coffee with his Betws Bledrws-based navigator Michael Gilbey. The season began with the Dovey Valley Motor Club-organised Rali Mike Darowen (3-4 February). Gilbey won the slippery event navigating for Kevin Davies in a Ford Escort, while Davies started what was to be a title-winning season with a solid seventh, and scoring 93 points out a possible 100, co-driven on this occasion by Cadog Davies.
