After a fantastic season riding his electric-powered Oset 24 trials motorcycle, Harry Best is the proud recipient of the Welsh Trials Championship C Class trophy. The talented 11-year old from Rhydlewis in Ceredigion was presented with his award at the recent Welsh Motorcycle Federation dinner by the 2017 FIM Trial 2 World Trials Champion rider Iwan Roberts. Best, who is a member of the Dyfed Dirt Bike Club, has been riding in trails competitions for four years and is one of Wales’ brightest up-and-coming riders.
Ronnie O’Sullivan went on the attack in the Manbetx Welsh Open Snooker Championships – and was even too quick for the referee. The Rocket had an average shot time of 12.8 seconds during his 4-2 first round win against Sanderson Lam at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff. He completed a fourth game century break by […]

Title-chasing Weymouth are planning a six-point EvoStik Southern League raid on Merthyr Town. The Premier Division rivals clash twice in quick succession and the first of those fixtures is at Merthyr’s MetCoaches Stadium this evening (Tuesday, 7.45). Weymouth’s record against the Martyrs is exceptional over the past 20 years, having lost just once in that […]
England prop Mako Vunipola will miss the Six Nations clash with Wales after being ruled out of the rest of the tournament with an ankle injury. The Saracens powerhouse suffered the injury in the Red Rose’s thrashing of France at Twickenham on Sunday. Vunipola’s and England’s worst fears were confirmed after medical assessments found he has damaged ankle ligaments and will be sidelined for up to 10 weeks.
New signings Danny Williams and Aaron Bolger both made their Bluebirds debut in the 3-2 Professional Under-23 Development League defeat against Coventry City. They were sent on during the second half after Cardiff City found themselves 3-0 down inside the first half an hour. The fight-back was impressive and Cardiff showed great spirit, but the […]
Matthew Maynard will be at the helm again for Glamorgan this season after confirmation last week that he will hold the coaching reins for the forthcoming season. Alun Rhys Chivers spoke to him about his aims and ambitions in his second spell in charge. After his appointment as Glamorgan’s interim head coach until the end of the coming season, Matthew Maynard has spoken of his desire to see the club become “the best of the rest” on the county circuit. He singles out Middlesex, Lancashire and Worcestershire as being the stand-out sides in Division Two of the County Championship, and wants the Welsh county to be hot on their heels after a disappointing 2018, which saw the departure of his predecessor Robert Croft and Mark Wallace being appointed Director of Cricket after Chief Executive Hugh Morris stood down following an external review.
The build-up, the noise, the fury and the banality that precedes every Wales v England game has already begun. It was ever thus. Though misty-eyed nostalgia can sometimes obscure the truth of this fixture when you look back. Dai Sport guest columnist Stephen Bale – former rugby correspondent at The Independent and The Express – reflects on the famous 1999 fixture of exactly 20 years ago . . . and remembers plenty you may have forgotten. After two decades, I remember it as if it were yesterday. Not Wales beating England 32-31 at a home from home that was otherwise not that homely, not the Scott Gibbs try nor the Neil Jenkins conversion that deprived England of a Grand Slam. No, it is – work done for the day – a memory of leaning over the outside parapet that used to be behind the old Wembley press box and staring down on the decamping Welsh masses with my friend Chris Hewett of The Independent and suggesting to him: “It’s all a class thing you see, Chris.”
A rare disappointing weekend for Penarth Hockey Club saw just one win added to their Verde Recreo League tally, and even that kept the assembled crowd at Stanwell waiting. The 1st XI’s trip to second-placed Cheltenham should have been the highlight of Saturday’s slate, especially with the impending debut of Pakistan international Mubashar Ali but, somewhat ironically on a weekend where the sports news was dominated by line-outs and scrums, two pitches with indeterminate outlines meant that Tom Haran and his men travelled across the border for nothing. As it stands, the game needs to be rearranged, but the matter also rests with league officials.
Matt Edwards will start the defence of his British Rally Championship title when he contests his local Llandudno-based Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally on Saturday (16 February). The popular one-day event is the new opening round of the BRC and offers competitors some of the best gravel stages in the world, with the action taking place in the classic rallying forests such as Clocaenog, Elsi, Gwydyr and Alwen. Partnered by new co-driver Patrick Walsh, Edwards is hoping for a strong start to the season in his M-Sport-entered Swift Caravans-backed Ford Fiesta R5.
Cardiff’s Kishan Hirani gave World champion and fellow Welshman Mark Williams a major scare in the ManBetX Welsh Open Snooker Championships at the Motorpoint Arena. Tour rookie Hirani, ranked 122 in the World and playing in his home city, made a 126 break to lead 2-1 before Williams scored breaks of 66 and 80 to […]
Imagine producing the athletic performance of your life and there was no-one present to measure and record it for posterity. It’s the stuff of nightmares for every level of athlete, from the back-of-the-pack Saturday morning parkrun shuffler to Olympic 100m finalist.

Wales Rugby League have announced their two open trial dates in preparation for their 2019 Celtic Cup campaign. Wales are holders of the Celtic Cup having won the competition in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The other competitors always being Ireland and Scotland.
George Byers has no doubts the same rapid footwork that takes Daniel James away from defenders will enable him to dodge any bullets at Leeds United this week. There are some Leeds fans who believes James should have done more to agitate and angle for his proposed move from Swansea City before it collapsed at the 11th hour on deadline day. The Wales winger sat in a room at Elland Road, waiting for a phone call to green light his £5m move. Instead, the call never came as former chairman Huw Jenkins made the last significant decision of his 17-year tenure which was to pull the plug on the transfer.
Josh Navidi has told his Wales teammates to put on their hard hats and prepare for a war of words before they face England next weekend. The Wales flanker believes it is vital Warren Gatland’s team need to concentrate on themselves and ignore the babble from outside. England coach Eddie Jones has already started to fire some bullets from over the border – designed, most likely, to mess with Welsh minds rather than inflict any serious flesh wounds.
Guildford Flames 4, Cardiff Devils 3 after overtime and penalties Write off this Cardiff Devils team at your peril. They were three goals down with two minutes 27 seconds left at Guildford Flames, but fought back to force the game into overtime. Mike Hedden (57-33), Mark Richardson (58-52) and Joey Martin (59-24) scored three goals […]
Heather Lewis won the battle of the Welsh race walkers as she took over the mantle of British Indoor Champion from Bethan Davies in Birmingham on Sunday. Pembrokeshire’s Lewis led the way for Wales as four athletes returned home with medal winning performances on the second day of the championships. Reigning British champion Davies took the lead from the start in the 5000m race walk with Lewis shadowing her up until the half-way stage of the race.
Taine Basham underlined why the Dragons rate him so highly as he guided Wales U20s to an emphatic 42-12 victory over Italy. The classy No.8 – who has already broken through and made seven appearances for his region – scored a hat-trick of tries in Mantova. It puts the Wales youngsters back on track after two rounds of their Six Nations and completed a good weekend for Wales as it followed the 26-15 triumph by the senior side in Rome and the gutsy 3-3 draw by Wales Women.
Wrexham gave notice they are going to scrap and battle for success under new manager Bryan Hughes. Their 1-0 home win against Dagenham and Redbridge was testimony to the team spirit and togetherness in the Dragons camp. Substitute Stuart Beavon scored a 74th minute winner for Wrexham, who moved third in the Vanarama National League […]
