Cardiff Fire face a Severnside derby shootout when Bristol Pitbulls come to South Wales for a National Ice Hockey League clash at the Viola Arena on Sunday (6pm). The rivals are level on points, although Fire have four games in hand, and Pitbulls bring a team full of former Cardiff players, a fact which will […]
Tesni Evans will begin the defence of her AJ Bell British National title against qualifier Alicia Mead in the first round. The 26-year-old had originally been seeded four for the event in Nottingham but has moved up one place with top seed Sarah-Jane Perry pulling out with a long-standing injury. Evans made history last year when she became the first Welsh woman to win the British crown.
Disabled sailors will get new opportunities to speed around South Wales waters thanks to Swansea Watersports being awarded status as an RYA Sailability Centre. Robbie Willmott has already picked out the Manchester City player he wants to swap shirts with after Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round tie at Rodney Parade. But the Newport County wide man is rather fearful that if he does get to swap, his own shirt will get used to wash the car. “I’d love a shirt, anyone’s shirt. If you get any one of their player’s shirts it is going to be a really collectable item,” said Willmott, who scored the first goal that helped to dump Middlesbrough out in the last round.
Graham Potter admitted Swansea City were able to do no more than “dig in” against a Leeds United team that threatened to bury them. The Swans eventually lost 2-1 at Elland Road on Wednesday night, a lucky escape in some regards given how dominant the home team were. Swans manager Potter praised his team for their resolve, but the defeat now leaves them seven points adrift of the play-of places, which will rise to 10 points if those clubs win their game in hand. “Leeds have got as good a chance of getting promoted as anybody from what I’ve seen,” said Potter.
Cardiff City are without a fixture this weekend, as the FA Cup takes centre stage. It will provide a pause after a traumatic month and Bluebirds fan Josh Thomas says there is plenty to reflect upon. After the final whistle at Southampton, relief soon turned into pure emotion, which felt more like the kind of normal football excitement no Cardiff City fan had experienced for some time. In one of the most difficult weeks in the club’s history we had claimed back-to-back wins for the first time since April 1962 to help us move back out of the relegation zone.
Leigh Halfpenny is back – on the training field, at least. Come the weekend and he might also have played his first match for three months for the Scarlets. So, should he come straight back for Wales against England? Robin Davey weighs up the call – and would leave out George North. Leigh Halfpenny needs to return for the ferocious challenge from England in what could well be a Grand Slam showdown at the Principality Stadium a week on Saturday. Halfpenny is just one of a whole host of selection issues facing coach Warren Gatland.
Swansea City Supporters Trust have angrily denied claims they are undermining attempts to reach a settlement in the long running dispute over the sale of the club three years ago. Lawyers acting for those who sold shares to the club’s American owners have claimed the Trust have twice pulled out of mediation talks. But the Trust have rebuffed the claims by suggesting the discussions were pointless because owners Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan were not going to attend.
Welshman Duane Jones has stopped practising this week – and believes that helped him beat hot favourite Judd Trump in the ManBetX Welsh Open Snooker Championships. Jones, from Mountain Ash, won 4-2 and said: “At the German Masters I reached the semi-finals and was practising a lot between matches. “By the semi-final I felt burned […]

Sophie Robinson is returning to the Wales squad for the three match test series in France later this month. The Nottingham-based player is part of coach Kevin Johnson’s 22-strong squad for the trip to Antibes which also includes two new caps. Neil Robertson blew any chance of scoring back-to-back 147 maximums breaks after a fellow Aussie yelled: “Go on Neil, make another one.” World number 10 Robertson, from Melbourne, had just compiled a 147 on his way to a 4-1 win against Jordan Brown and took a short break to regain his composure. Snooker fans rushed […]
Two of Wales’ brightest young athletes have been included in a world class line-up for the Muller Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham this weekend. Cardiff AAC duo Jake Heyward and Jeremiah Azu will compete alongside more then 50 global medallists on Saturday. Ranked as the world’s number one indoor event, the Grand Prix will feature the likes of Rio 2016 double sprint gold medallist Elaine Thompson, of Jamaica and Greece’s world and Olympic pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi at Arena Birmingham.
Michael Flynn did his best to keep calm in the wake of one of the most frustrating nights of the season for him as he saw his side fluff their lines in the big dress rehearsal for Saturday’s FA Cup showdown with mighty Manchester City. “We created enough chances to win five games, but we didn’t win one. That’s why we are a mid-table team,” was Flynn’s honest post-match assessment. “The effort was fantastic and there were some outstanding bits of play, but it would have been nice to finish them off. When you have that many chances, gilt edged as well, you can see why we don’t kill teams off.
