Tesni Evans and Joel Makin are into the third round of the World Championships in Chicago after both came through tough battles. Cardiff-born Evans came from one game down to beat Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-Ling in the second round of the $500,000 women’s event. No 10 seed Evans triumphed 10-12, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6 in 37 minutes.

Captain Nia Jones and her Dragons will be fired up for the Vitality Netball Superleague challenge after running leaders and reigning champions Wasps close in their last match. Eddie Jones and his England team woke up in Cardiff on Sunday morning with ‘Hymns and Arias’ and ‘Bread of Heaven’ still ringing in their ears and to the news that Wales have also leapfrogged them in the World Rugby rankings after their 21-13 victory at Principality Stadium. Jones was probably still seeking some consolation in the fact that his team had been overhauled by ‘the greatest Welsh team of all-time’. Truth be told, he was outgunned by a far superior coach and his team came up short in a street-fight on which the men in red were fitter, stronger, better-prepared and wanted it that bit more. Now, that team will climb to third in the world, behind New Zealand and Ireland, as the countdown continues to the World Cup later this year.
Tesni Evans is into the second round of the World Championships in Chicago after a straight sets victory. The 26-year-old triumphed 13-11,11-4, 11-9 against Holland’s Milou van der Heijden in the $500,000 tournament at Union Station. Evans, seeded 10 for the event, took 37 minutes to see off the world ranked 31 player who had just won her third Dutch national title.
Rowland Phillips has praised the efforts of his Wales women’s team, but warned that paying players on its own will not close the gap on England. The head coach watched his team lose 51-12 at Cardiff Arms Park in their Six Nations clash, a scoreline that did not reflect the balance of play for the middle part of the match. Wales scored two tries and had periods when they put England under sustained pressure but the ruthless manner in which England took their nine touchdowns reflected the fact that the fixture is one between a fully professional outfit and a largely amateur one.
Welsh defender Adam Davies apologised to team-mates and Martyrs fans after their 2-1 defeat against Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium. The 25-year-old former Llanelli and Hereford FC player has made well over 200 appearances for the Martyrs and is a key player for the EvoStik Southern League team. Two goals by Brandon Goodship, joint […]
Newport County remain focused on earning a place in the League Two play-offs despite their 2-0 defeat at MK Dons. “Never say never until it’s mathematically not possible,” said Flynn. “We have a tough home game next weekend against Carlisle United and we need to win it. “Carlisle have had a great season so far […]
Wrexham completed their 1,400 miles trek in eight days when they arrived home in North Wales. The Dragons have earned seven points from three Vanarama National League fixtures against Havant, Boreham Wood and Gateshead over the last week. Cole Stockton’s 93rd minute equaliser during the 1-1 draw against Gateshead at the International Stadium was celebrated […]
Belfast Giants 2, Cardiff Devils 1 after sudden death overtime Canadian defenceman Curtis Leonard inflicted a damaging blow to Cardiff Devils’ Elite League title hopes with a dramatic overtime winner at the SSE Arena. Referees Tom Darnell and Tom Pering took an age studying video replays before deciding the goal should stand, so long it […]
Cardiff City 3, Coventry City 3 Kieron Evans, a teenager from New Tredegar, struck a crucial late blow for Cardiff City in their under-18 fixture against Coventry City. The Sky Blues were 3-2 ahead deep in second half injury time when Evans scored his second goal of the match. Evans was spotted by Bluebirds scouts […]
Chaz Davies believes he is finally getting a feeling for his new bike after battling his way to seventh in the second race of the season-opening doubleheader in Australia. The Knighton-born rider had been disappointed with his 16th place in the opening race of the campaign at Phillip Island on Saturday. Davies had finished 10th in the new-style 10-lap Superpole race on Sunday morning which has been introduced by Superbikes bosses this season.
Evan Hoyt landed his third ITF World Tour doubles title on the year in Scotland. The Welshman was partnered to victory in the $25,000 Glasgow tournament by fellow Brit Luke Johnson against the American Tom Fawcett and Alexander Ritschard. The British pairing set off at a furious pace in the final on Saturday, cruising to victory in the first set 6-1.
Dewi Griffiths made a winning return to the Welsh Cross Country Championships by chalking up a magnificent seventh title just a couple of days after arriving back in Wales from a month’s altitude training in America. The Swansea Harrier had won six titles in a row before missing last year’s event through injury, and was determined to regain his title despite having only stepped off the plane on Thursday. Moments after crossing the line at Pembrey Country Park, near Llanelli, Griffiths said: “I wasn’t sure how the legs were going to react after travelling back from Boulder on Wednesday evening, Thursday morning. My body probably doesn’t know what time of day it is.”
By Harri Morgan After his prolonged lay-off, the rugby masses will breathe a sigh of relief when Leigh Halfpenny returns to business this afternoon. He is just one of the blokes that exudes the values of which followers of the sport readily boast. He will do so in the Scarlet of his region on a Sunday, rather than the red of his nation on Saturday evening. The correct decision. The talk of him returning straight into the main mix, the Six Nations cauldron, seemed devoid of logic.
With the half-time words of his coaches still ringing in his ears, Dragons wing Deon Smith executed their wishes perfectly as he ‘finished off’ England with an injury time try in the Under 20 Six Nations match in Colwyn Bay on Friday night. Smith came on in the second half and scored the dramatic try in the 81st minute that earned Wales a sensational 11-10 victory to make it back-to-back victories. Now they head to Scotland in two weeks’ time before ending with another home tie against the Irish in north Wales. “At half-time they told us to carry on what we were doing and to finish it off. The gap was there and luckily I was able to take it,” said Smith.
As he heads towards another possible Grand Slam, Warren Gatland has suggested Wales don’t crack too often in the really big matches – unlike England. The Wales coach – choosing to be a little more spikey after the game than before it – cast doubt on England’s ability to win the games that count after his side came from behind to defeat their arch-rivals 21-13 in a dramatic Six Nations contest in Cardiff on Saturday. Gatland’s men were 10-3 down at the break after England flank Tom Curry scored the only try of the first half.
Sheffield Wednesday 3 Swansea City 1 Graham Potter branded his Swansea City side ‘soft’ as their chances of challenging for the play-offs suffered a major blow at Sheffield Wednesday. The Swans paid for some poor defending as the Owls hit them for three goals in the first-half. Adam Reach struck a double – the second after Declan John’s woeful attempted clearance – with Steven Fletcher netting with a spectacular overhead kick.

Owen Farrell insists England are ready for any Welsh trickery in the tense moments before Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations title collision in Cardiff. Four years ago Chris Robshaw ordered his players to wait in the tunnel instead of running into the Principality Stadium arena knowing that with Wales still in their changing room, they would […]
