Four touchdowns helped the South Wales Warriors to a second victory in seven days over the Somerset Wyverns. Two quickfire scores helped the Warriors to a 13-0 first quarter lead over their hosts who’d fallen to a 29-6 defeat at Llanharan a week earlier. Warriors quarterback Dean Jackson threw two touchdown passes, the first to 19-year-old receiver Jamie Gilpin, and a second to Lawrence Tuckett for a strong start. Matt Morris added the conversion to Tuckett’s touchdown after his first conversion attempt was blocked.
Christian Dibble and Devonte Redmond were young schoolboys when they sat in the back seat of a car on their way to Wrexham’s Racecourse ground. The pre-teenage kids chattered excitedly as they went with their dads, goalkeeper Andy Dibble and wing-back Paul Edwards, to watch the Dragons’ latest match in their quest for promotion. Manager […]
Chris Mepham admits Wales cannot afford to falter against Hungary after their Euro 2020 qualifying setback in Croatia. Hungary’s 3-1 win in Azerbaijan on Saturday evening took them to the top of Group E ahead of their date with Wales in Budapest on Tuesday. Wales are now three points adrift of top-two Hungary and Croatia, albeit with a game in hand, after losing 2-1 to the World Cup finalists in Osijek.
British squash champion Tesni Evans, the Wales number one, took on the World’s best squash player in Cairo this evening (Sunday). Cardiff-born Evans, ranked World number nine, faced Egypt’s Raneem El Welily – and gave her opponent some uncomfortable moments before losing 11-6, 11-4. The result was a straight games win for El Wellily, who […]
Rob Page’s Wales under-21 were edged out 2-1 in their friendly International against Albania at the Selman Stermasi Stadium in Tirana. The match was the first of two friendly matches and the teams meet again on Tuesday. Wales were without Cardiff City’s Cameron Coxe, who was injured during training, while there was a welcome return […]
Chaz Davies was left gutted after being sent crashing out of the World Superbikes race in Jerez to complete a miserable weekend. The Knighton-born rider saw his race ended after just six laps when he was hit by former team-mate Marco Melandri at turn five.
Harrison Walsh has shattered the F44 world shot put record at the Para-athletics Grand Prix in Grosseto. The Mumbles thrower produced a superb first round effort of 15.73m in the Italian city to etch his name into the record books.
Jess Roberts is rounding off her season in the stripes of national champion in style after he blasted to a stunning victory in France. The 20-year-old is unable to defend the British crown she won in spectacular style last year as she is competing for Britain on the track at the European Games in Belarus.
If you thought it was just the Welsh regions who are cash strapped, then think again. Some of the most famous club names in Welsh rugby have been forced to put out the begging bowl this year to try to make ends meet as spiralling costs and reduced funding begin to bite harder and harder. Pontypridd and Cross Keys launched Just Giving funding pages to try to cover their costs for the 2018/19 season and now Llanelli RFC have taken a different path to try to stave off oblivion.
There are variety of emotions among Welsh players in the under-21 squad for two friendly matches against Albania away. Swansea City midfield player Jack Evans is surely the man looking forward to playing more than anybody else. More than a year after the crushing news that Evans had cancer he is preparing for a return […]
Gareth Evans broke the British record in Coventry to lead the way as Welsh weightlifters sharpened up for the Commonwealth Championships in Samoa next month. Wales’ Commonwealth Games champion produced a snatch of 131kg to claim the record with his combined total of 286kg also a new British best in the 73kg category. The 33-year-old set a new record of 128kg in the snatch, saw it broken by British rival Allan King who lifted 130kg but responded with the new best of 131kg with his next attempt.
Chaz Davies is hoping overnight improvements will lead to a better showing in today’s World Superbikes race in Jerez after a disappointing time in the first race. The Powys rider came home a distant seventh as Aruba It Racing team-mate Alvaro Bautista romped to another victory to increase his lead in the World Championship standings.
The Women’s World Cup has kicked off in France and today England – who edged out Wales in qualification – begin their campaign against Scotland in Nice. The tournament promises to create more noise than any before and, as Graham Thomas notes, is part of an increasing volume around the world, with Wales playing their part. Odd, rather than even number years in the calendar – such as 2019 – are supposed to be the quiet ones. But the impact being made across the board by women in Welsh sport, and the rising commercial interest, suggests this year could be of landmark significance.
Wales were overpowered by the reigning world champions, France – 32-13 – in their second outing at the World U20 Championships and will have to beat Fiji on Wednesday to stay in the running for a top tier finish. Welsh hopes were high after their impressive 30-25 opening day win over the host nation, but they were simply brushed aside by a power-packed French team who repeated their four try, 32-10 Six Nations victory earlier in the year. Fiery up front and fluent behind, the French forced Wales to miss more than 30 tackles as they conjured up 25 off-loads as they dominated possession and territory. Against a weaker, less cohesive side they would have run riot.
Ryan Giggs insisted he made the right call to leave David Brooks on the bench despite the impact he made as a substitute during Wales’ 2-1 defeat to Croatia. Brooks came on and sparked a Wales revival with his first goal for his country but it was not enough as Giggs’ side failed to take late chances in Osijek. It meant a first defeat of the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign for Wales who now face Hungary in Budapest on Tuesday.
Dear Old Blowers would have been in his element. The retired BBC radio cricket commentator Henry Blofeld loved an attractive cricket ground which inspired him to use his vast vocabulary as a palette from which to paint pictures for his listeners. There are few more picturesque grounds in county cricket than Swansea’s St Helen’s.
Croatia captain Luka Modric says Gareth Bale’s problems at Real Madrid will not affect him while on Euro 2020 duty for Wales. Bale comes up against his Real team-mate and great friend Modric in Osijek on Saturday, having suffered a nightmare end to the season at the Bernabeu. The Welshman was dropped from the starting XI, and boss Zinedine Zidane even refused to bring him off the bench in the final LaLiga game when Los Blancos were losing 2-0 at home to Real Betis.

Making up the ‘Fab Four’ is the current President of GB Hockey, Shelia Morrow, who is made OBE for her services to hockey. Like Jones and Ludlow, Morrow is a member of the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame Roll of Honour.
