Wales’ most successful netball coach of recent times, Melissa Hyndman, and national team skipper Nia Jones are set to be re-united next season – in England. Hyndman will be back in charge of a Netball Superleague club next season after being unveiled as the new head coach at Severn Stars. A British League for rugby union’s top teams has been discussed many times over the years – going back to the early days of professionalism in the 1990s. Zoe Backstedt is a double European Youth Olympic champion after following up her gold medal in the time trial with victory in the road race at Baku 2019. The 14-year-old rising Welsh star was helped into a three rider break by teammate Millie Couzens early on in the 50km race before pulling away on her own in the final few kilometres to seal a convincing win. Not far behind Backstedt, Couzens then led out Imani Pereira-James for a sprint finish for fourth, with the Glasgow rider finishing in sixth.

Rising Welsh javelin star Tom Hewson celebrated the news of his first Great Britain senior call-up by breaking the meeting record at the annual Welsh Athletics Under-20 International in Cardiff. Geraint Thomas insists another Tour de France title is still within his grasp, despite dropping to third place in the overall race classification. The defending champion lost no time on leader Julian Alaphilippe, but the Welshman’s Ineos team-mate Egan Bernal has leapfrogged into second place after a dramatic Stage 18 in The Alps. Thomas is now five seconds behind Bernal and still 1 minute 30 seconds behind Alaphilippe with two more racing days to come.

Georgia Davies and Alys Thomas narrowly missed out on medals at the World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Davies was equal fourth in the 50m backstroke, 24 hours after claiming her first medal in four World Championships in the mixed 4x100m medley relay after Thomas had come fifth in the 200m butterfly. The 28-year-old Davies swam a season’s best of 27.65secs only to be locked out of the podium by one place and 0.14secs.

Ben Wilmot has pinpointed Swansea City manager Steve Cooper’s success in working with young player as an attraction that led to his loan deal. The 19-year-old Watford defender has moved to the Liberty Stadium on a season-long agreement following a loan spell in Italy last season with Udinese.
