Having been away from the British Rally Championship for over two and a half years, Osian Pryce says that finishing second to reigning British champion Matt Edwards on his home round of the series, the Llandudno-based Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally, was “as good as a win”. While Edwards has enjoyed two successful seasons in the BRC, winning the title in 2018 and ’19 in a Ford Fiesta R5 (and winning the Cambrian Rally last year), Pryce hasn’t been seen in Britain’s premier rally series since August 2017. Despite being one of the most talented drivers in Britain, Pryce – the 2016 DriveDMACK Fiesta Trophy champion – has struggled to find sufficient funding to get him back into the BRC, let alone the World Championship, where he undoubtedly belongs.
Wales have been given an apology for the cold showers provided for them at the end of their women’s Six Nations international against Ireland in Dublin. The Irish Rugby Football Union make no mention of the incident on their website – despite carrying four separate stories on their team’s 31-12 victory at Donnybrook, home of the two club sides, Bective Rangers and Old Wesley. Ireland made it two wins from two in the 2020 tournament with a bonus point victory in strong winds and driving rain.
Wayne Pivac has insisted Wales can still retain their Six Nations title – but has admitted big improvements are needed for them to beat France, England and Scotland. The Wales coach says there will be no panic as his team look to regroup in this season’s tournament following their setback against Ireland. Wales will get their campaign back on track if they beat France at the Principality Stadium in 12 days’ time.
Neil Harris has urged his Cardiff City team they must make the most of the next week if they are to break into the Championship top six. The Bluebirds are up to eighth in the table and are now only four points behind the play-off places after their 1-0 win at Luton Town. Lee Tomlin scored the only goal of the game as Harris’s side moved above Swansea City in the table – on goals scored – for the first time this season.
Melissa Courtney-Bryant burst back on the international scene after a five month break with a spectacular 3,000m win in Germany on Sunday afternoon. The Poole AC athlete’s return to competition saw her lining up at the PSD Bank Indoor Meeting in Dortmund for the first time since the inaugural Europe v USA International Match in Minsk last September. Courtney-Bryant produced a dominant performance, which was rounded off with a fast finish to clock 8:49.78 ahead of a strong field.
Matt Edwards got the defence of his British Rally Championship title off to the perfect start with victory on the opening round of the 2020 series, his local Llandudno-based Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally. Despite stalling on the start line of the first stage – a mistake which saw Edwards complete SS1 down in fourth place – the double British champion was thereafter a man on a mission, setting quickest time on five of the remaining six stages. Co-driven by Darren Garrod from nearby Abersoch, Edwards looked like he’d have a close battle on his hands with Tom Cave and Osian Pryce, who were both driving Hyundai i20 R5s.
Wales’ Tom Lawrence has been praised as a special talent by his Derby County manager Phillip Cocu after he undermined Swansea City’s faltering promotion hopes. Lawrence was in the headlines for the wrong reasons back in October when he was convicted for drink-driving and his form dipped in the weeks that followed at a club that was then struggling. But his spectacular shooting and winning goal in Derby’s 3-2 victory at the Liberty Stadium reminded Ryan Giggs what the attacking midfielder can offer to his country at this summer’s Euro finals.
Wayne Pivac is hoping Dan Biggar’s scrambled senses and Wales’ jolted defence are both restored to working order as he looks ahead to his team’s next Six Nations assignment against France. Biggar’s clash with Robbie Henshaw during Ireland’s 24-14 bonus point victory in Dublin resulted in the Wales No. 10 failing a head injury assessment for the third time in less than five months. The Northampton player is to be assessed again but a lengthy lay-off may now follow for the Wales No.10 in a position where Pivac is already without Gareth Anscombe and Rhys Patchell.
Tyler Garratt, a 23-year-old left-back, is the sixth signing for Wrexham manager Dean Keates in 2020. The Dragons still had the option of loan signings even though the transfer window has closed and Garratt joined Wrexham from Stockport County. He has committed to the end of this season, covering the loss of James Jennings to […]
There has been pain and pleasure for Welshmen during the Olympic ice hockey qualifying tournament in Nottingham. Great Britain kit manager Jason ‘Taffy’ Ellery suffered when he was hit in the face by a puck during the 4-3 win against Romania, while Cardiff Devils’ Matthew Myers scored for GB from a chance created by Ben […]
Shaun Edwards’ ferocious glare from the sidelines – and his glee at England’s destruction as he sat in his French tracksuit – was the defining image of round one of the Six Nations. Wales’ former head analyst, ex-international Alun Carter says Edwards and France are a Paris match made in heaven. France have finally found a conscience in the shape of defence coach Shaun Edwards. What is it that sets him apart? Well. he makes Grant Mitchell look like a kitten.
A strong Welsh squad has been named to compete at next week’s prestigious Armagh International Road Races. The men’s event is reputed to be one of the fastest 5ks in the world and along with the women’s 3k race, it attracts elite athletes from all over the world to the Northern Irish city. At last year’s event, a record 113 competitors broke the 15 minute mark in the men’s 5k event won by Finland’s Topi Raitenen, while 49 women dipped under 10 minutes in the 3k race won by Great Britain international Steph Twell.
Wales are in action today for round two of the Six Nations when they face Ireland. Ben Gould takes a look at the key areas and assesses the options as Wayne Pivac and his team bid for a first tournament victory in Dublin since 2012. It will be easier said than done for Wales to continue their transition to the wider, more expansive blueprint of Wayne Pivac. The players’ core skills of catching and passing whilst engaging defenders, will inherently be subject to a more intense scrutiny in the wider channels.
Two games, no points and Wales U20 are rock bottom of the Six Nations table after a record four successive tournament defeat. A second-half fightback in Cork against last season’s Grand Slam champions, who were enjoying their record-breaking seventh win in a row, saved the blushes of the Welsh side, but they were once again very much second best a week after losing to Italy in Colwyn Bay, as they were beaten 36-22. They did manage to trim 10 points off their 24-point interval deficit after the break, but still conceded a fifth try even with the howling gale at their backs.
Steve Cooper has admitted time is running out for Swansea City to launch a promotion surge. The Swans manager has urged his team to make the most of their next three games that are crammed into an intense seven-day spell – or else they will fall too far behind to be considered serious contenders to return to the Premier League. Cooper’s side are currently in eighth position in the Championship, four points adrift of the play-offs and will host Derby County and Wayne Rooney on Saturday on the back of another sobering prediction from chairman Trevor Birch that there is more cost-cutting to come.
Bradley Woolridge will be looking to make amends when Cardiff Met face Connah’s Quay Nomads at Latham Park in the quarter finals of the Welsh Cup at the end of this month. The Archers’ recent 2-1 victory over Penybont – which came to thanks a brace from Eliot Evans – secured the students’ place in the last eight of the competition. It means an opportunity for Woolridge to redeem himself after his late own goal turned out to be the winner for the Nomads when the two sides met in the Welsh Premier League in December.
Wales have been consulting with World Rugby referee chief Alain Rolland over their scrum issues ahead of their trip to Dublin this weekend. New head coach Wayne Pivac saw his scrum concede three penalties to the Italians last weekend and knows that he cannot afford to let the Ireland pack get on top in the tight if his side is to notch a Welsh record ninth successive Six Nations wins tomorrow. “We’ve done an extensive review of our performance against Italy and we’ve spoken with the match officials to get their take on scrummaging and what to expect this weekend, amongst other things,” said Pivac.
Celtic Dragons welcome fellow Vitality Netball Superleague clubs Team Bath and London Pulse to South Wales this Saturday (February 8). Rebekah Robinson and Latanya Wilson, Dragons two import players from Jamaica, are with the team and are playing this weekend. Robinson and Wilson, the Dragons’ two 2020 import players, have already made a big impression […]
Osian Pryce makes a very welcome return to the British Rally Championship (BRC), as Welsh drivers dominate the leading entries for this Saturday’s opening round of the series, the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally. It’s been over two and a half years since the talented 26-year old Machynlleth-born driver was last seen in Britain’s premier rally series – where he led the 2017 championship at half distance, before mechanical gremlins in the second half of the season ended his title challenge. His last BRC outing was the Ulster Rally in August 2017. Together with new co-driver Noel O’Sullivan, Pryce will contest this weekend’s event in the same Melvyn Evans Motorsport-run Hyundai i20 R5 in which he won last year’s Get Connected Rali Bae Ceredigion – Wales’ first closed public road stage rally.
Jenny Nesbitt is aiming to graduate from her student athletics career with a medal at next month’s World University Cross Country Championships in Morocco. Now 25-years-old, this is the Cardiff Metropolitan University student’s last chance to represent Great Britain at university level, having competed for her country on three other occasions. On her previous appearance at the World University Cross Country Championships, Nesbitt finished just outside the medals after leading for most of the race.
