Lee Tomlin has been pinpointed as Cardiff City’s major threat by Huddersfield Town ahead of the Championship clash at The John Smith’s Stadium. The Bluebirds midfielder has scored three goals in his last four games and has been praised for his increasing influence by manager Neil Harris and captain Sean Morrison. That impact has not gone un-noticed by Huddersfield who are desperate to check Cardiff’s play-off push in order to sustain their own efforts to avoid relegation.
Steve Cooper admitted he understood the frustration of Swansea City fans as he conceded a goalless draw at home to QPR – without a single shot on target – was simply not good enough. The Swans manager was reluctant to find fault with his team’s supporters who voiced their frustration at the final whistle at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night.
Darrell Clarke believes his Walsall players are in for a tough time against Newport County at Rodney Parade this evening (Tuesday). Former Salisbury City and Bristol Rovers manager Clarke, who took over from current Wrexham team boss Dean Keates at Walsall, says: “Newport have a really dodgy pitch if seeing it on TV is anything […]
Australian Neil Robertson starts the defence of his ManBetX Welsh Open snooker title at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on Tuesday evening. Robertson’s first round match is against Llanelli-born Jamie Clarke, a 25-year-old nicknamed the ‘Welsh Whirlwind’. A year ago, Robertson was crowned champion in Cardiff after beating Stuart Bingham in the final. He takes […]
Four Welsh endurance runners are included on a list of British athletes offered funding from London Marathon Events (LME) for the 2020 season. Cardiff Athletics club members Jake Heyward, Charlotte Arter and Jenny Nesbitt are joined by Natasha Cockram, of the Micky Morris Racing on the 30-strong list. The athlete programme is part of a larger £350,000 funding commitment from LME including support of the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) and training camps for British endurance athletes.
Parkrun world record holder Charlotte Arter is part of a strong Welsh team competing at the Barcelona Half Marathon on Sunday. Arter, who broke her own global best time at the Cardiff parkrun on February 1, will be hoping to transfer that kind of form to the longer distance around the streets of the picturesque Spanish city. The Cardiff athlete will be joined in the Welsh team by the likes of fellow Gold Coast Commonwealth Games teammates Eli Kirk and Josh Griffiths.
Don’t panic was the message given by Wayne Pivac after Wales’ opening Six Nations defeat in Dublin. It’s a response shared by Geraint Powell, who says Rome wasn’t built in a day even if the Italians were demolished in one previous afternoon. This being Welsh rugby – where so many fans and pundits only have the default settings of glory or disaster – the upbeat mood from the 2019 Six Nations Grand Slam and another World Cup semi-final appearance came crashing down with a 24-14 Wales defeat in Dublin and the post-mortem rapidly began. As if transitioning Wales towards a more attack-minded and fluid game was somehow going to be quick and painless, even without the new coaching regime currently being denied the presence of Jonathan Davies, Gareth Anscombe, Rhys Patchell and Liam Williams (amongst quite a few others, especially at centre).
Steve Cooper has told his Swansea City players it’s time to “man up” and get their Championship promotion bid back on the road. The Swans have been blown off course with just one victory in their last five matches and just a single point from their last three. It means they host QPR at the Liberty Stadium tonight, having slipped back to ninth place in the table, four points adrift of the play-off places.
Tom Cave was left, quite literally, between a rock and a hard place on Saturday’s Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally – for having led the event for the opening two stages, a collision with a rock on stage three saw a potential victory slip away. The 28-year old Aberdyfi driver was hoping for a good start to his British Rally Championship campaign, having been a top title challenger in recent years. Partnered by Llanfyllin-based co-driver Dale Furniss, Cave was 1.7 seconds ahead of the eventual event winner Matt Edwards going into the Penmachno forest stage, but his chances of victory vanished when he drifted a little wide and clipped a rock with the rear nearside wheel. The impact was enough to break the alloy and puncture the tyre, forcing him to stop his Hyundai i20 R5 at the side of the road to change the wheel.
A crackdown has been urged at Westminster on so-called “grey” charter flights following the plane crash that killed Emiliano Sala. The use of unlicensed air taxis, including by celebrities to travel incognito, was a growing problem in the aviation industry, the House of Lords heard. The Government has said it shares these concerns and is currently carrying out a safety review, which would look at what further steps can be taken to combat illegal air charters.
Dean Keates goes head-to-head with hugely experienced Gary Johnson when Wrexham entertain Torquay United at the Racecourse on Saturday. London-born Johnson, aged 64, has been in football management for 34 years and is not far off qualifying for the 1,000 games club, while Keates has been a manager for four years. Johnson, whose son Lee […]
Merthyr Town faced another daunting test when Taunton Town make the trip from Somerset to South Wales on Tuesday evening (7.45pm). The Martyrs could not stop Chesham United going clear at the top of BetVictor Southern League Premier on Saturday, losing 2-0 away, and now they take on promotion chasing Taunton at the MetCoaches Stadium. […]
Elinor Barker is gearing up for this month’s World Track Championships as she looks to add to her four rainbow jerseys. Wales’s Olympic champ has been named in GB’s endurance line-up as part of a 20-strong squad for the champs in the German capital.
Great Britain’s Olympic dream ended when they slipped up 4-1 in their qualifying clash with Hungary at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham. Cardiff Devils forward Matthew Myers scored for GB, but they finished second in the qualifying group Hungary take the lone spot in the next stage. Hungary now go to Latvia – one of […]
Wales international Sara Bell says her Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School team are keen to test themselves against the best the Valleys has to offer at the Rhondda Cynon Taff Schools Netball Championship. The former Celtic Dragons Superleague player – now playing in the Premier League with Bath Toucans – coaches the schools teams at Bryn Celynnog, who are competing in the Rhondda tournament for the first time on February 13. Defending champions Ysgol Nantgwyn have already pinpointed Bryn Celynnog as serious rivals for their crown at the 13-team tournament and Sara reckons her Beddau newcomers are poised to offer a big challenge as the leading netball schools across the RCT area battle it out.
Having been away from the British Rally Championship for over two and a half years, Osian Pryce says that finishing second to reigning British champion Matt Edwards on his home round of the series, the Llandudno-based Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally, was “as good as a win”. While Edwards has enjoyed two successful seasons in the BRC, winning the title in 2018 and ’19 in a Ford Fiesta R5 (and winning the Cambrian Rally last year), Pryce hasn’t been seen in Britain’s premier rally series since August 2017. Despite being one of the most talented drivers in Britain, Pryce – the 2016 DriveDMACK Fiesta Trophy champion – has struggled to find sufficient funding to get him back into the BRC, let alone the World Championship, where he undoubtedly belongs.
Wales have been given an apology for the cold showers provided for them at the end of their women’s Six Nations international against Ireland in Dublin. The Irish Rugby Football Union make no mention of the incident on their website – despite carrying four separate stories on their team’s 31-12 victory at Donnybrook, home of the two club sides, Bective Rangers and Old Wesley. Ireland made it two wins from two in the 2020 tournament with a bonus point victory in strong winds and driving rain.
Wayne Pivac has insisted Wales can still retain their Six Nations title – but has admitted big improvements are needed for them to beat France, England and Scotland. The Wales coach says there will be no panic as his team look to regroup in this season’s tournament following their setback against Ireland. Wales will get their campaign back on track if they beat France at the Principality Stadium in 12 days’ time.
Neil Harris has urged his Cardiff City team they must make the most of the next week if they are to break into the Championship top six. The Bluebirds are up to eighth in the table and are now only four points behind the play-off places after their 1-0 win at Luton Town. Lee Tomlin scored the only goal of the game as Harris’s side moved above Swansea City in the table – on goals scored – for the first time this season.
Melissa Courtney-Bryant burst back on the international scene after a five month break with a spectacular 3,000m win in Germany on Sunday afternoon. The Poole AC athlete’s return to competition saw her lining up at the PSD Bank Indoor Meeting in Dortmund for the first time since the inaugural Europe v USA International Match in Minsk last September. Courtney-Bryant produced a dominant performance, which was rounded off with a fast finish to clock 8:49.78 ahead of a strong field.
