Rocker Jimmy Watkins, A Few Pints . . . And The Mad Bet That’s Taken Seven Years To Settle

A pub bet made with an Englishman before Wales’ 30-3 Six Nations win over England seven years ago has led to a crazy fund-raising event in Llanelli this weekend, featuring Jimmy Watkins. Former international athlete turned rock musician Watkins told the English fan that whatever the winning margin, he would run a mile for each point . . . immediately after the game and wearing a pair of blue suede shoes! What Watkins hadn’t bargained for, was a rampant Welsh side racking up an unforgettable 30-3 win, resulting in a record-breaking winning margin and a daunting 27-mile run for the Welshman! A 2006 World Athletics Championships 800m finalist he may have been, but Watkins had long given up the sport for a rock’n’roll lifestyle which he admits wasn’t the healthiest.

Time To Let The French Have It . . . Unleash Louis Rees-Zammit

Now that Wayne Pivac has his feet under the table – only for the table to be upturned by Ireland -Robin Davey argues it is time for the Wales coach to make some changes. That should mean, he says, a call for teenage wing Louis Rees-Zammit. Welcome to the Wales job, Wayne Pivac! After a welcome easy ride first time out in the Six Nations against chopping blocks Italy, reality kicked for the Wales coach against Ireland.

Wales Starlet Robbie Burton Insists Leaving Arsenal Is Right Path

Wales U21 star Robbie Burton insists he has made the right move in leaving Arsenal to join Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb. The deal, reported to be worth £800,000 to the Gunners, was still dependent on the 20-year-old midfielder agreeing to become the first British player to move to the Croatian capital club. Burton is viewed as a rising star within the Wales set-up and seemed to be on the verge of a first team breakthrough at Arsenal during Unai Emery’s time as manager.

Wales Given Dan Biggar Boost . . . But Flag Up French Cheating Worries

Dan Biggar and Josh Adams are both expected to make the Wales team to face France, who will have taken note of Wyn Jones’ claims the visitors will try to cheat their way to victory on Saturday. Outside-half Biggar suffered concussion during the 24-14 defeat to Ireland in Dublin – a position the Grand Slam champions are struggling in after Owen Williams was ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury. Wales assistant coach Jonathan Humphreys said: “Dan Biggar’s good. He’s taking part in full training. He’s hopefully going to carry on and pass his protocols. Fingers crossed, he’ll be ready.”

Out Of Africa: Kenya Trip Just The Boost For Welsh Endurance Star Clara

A month’s altitude training in Kenya followed by a fortnight’s warm weather work in Spain is paying dividends for Welsh endurance athlete Clara Evans. A half-marathon personal best on the streets of Barcelona last weekend is a positive indication that six weeks away from home over Christmas and the new year will be well worth it. The Cardiff athlete is hoping all those high altitude and warm weather miles in the bank will pay off with a place on the Great Britain half-marathon team for the European Athletics Championship in Paris at the end of this summer.

Wales’ Gareth Davies Admits: Antoine Is The Special One

Gareth Davies has installed France scrum-half Antoine Dupont as the dangerman Wales must keep quiet this weekend in round three of the Guinness Six Nations. The Scarlets man went head-to-head with the 23-year-old rising Toulouse star in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup in Japan earlier in the season when Wales came out on top 20-19 in Oita. But Dupont has been in brilliant form in France’s opening two games in the 2020 Six Nations and has been branded by Davies as one of the most in-form players in the world. He has already racked up 138 running metres and made six offloads as Les Bleus have remained unbeaten.

Before today, only six nationalities had won the traditional winter round of the series, with 64 victories out of 70 events going to either Swedish or Finnish drivers. Colin McRae came close by finishing second in 1992, but in a brilliant performance Evans led this year’s event from start to finish to leave Sweden tied at the top of the drivers’ standings with Thierry Neuville.

Cardiff City Never Came Back For Kieffer Moore . . . But He’s Massive For Us, Says Wigan Boss

Cardiff City fans have been told they will soon be cheering Kieffer Moore again – even though his two goals slowed the Bluebirds’ promotion push. Moore scored twice for Wigan in their 2-2 draw at the Cardiff City Stadium, where the 6ft 7in Wales striker has yet to find the net for his adopted country. But the player who scored vital away goals for Ryan Giggs’ side on their way to successful qualification for the Euro 2020 finals, will soon have supporters in the capital cheering for him, according to Wigan manager Paul Cook.
