Figures from across Welsh football have been paying tribute to former Wales goalkeeper Dai Davies, who had died at the age of 72. The former Everton, Wrexham, Swansea City and Tranmere keeper was diagnoised with terminal pancreatic cancer last year, and was treated at the Royal Hospital in Liverpool before being moved to the Nightingale Hospice in Wrexham. Once Wales’ most-capped keeper, Davies made 52 appearances for his country before going on to run a health clinic and enjoying a long and successful career as a pundit, particularly in Welsh language broadcasting.

Wales women will begin life without head coach Jayne Ludlow at a training camp next week. The 26-strong squad will begin preparations at the Vale Resort in Hensol for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying campaign.

Scott Williams believes the best thing to happen to George North this season was being dropped by Wayne Pivac. Ospreys centre Williams – a teammate of North’s for region and country – believes the Lions star has found his best form following that rejection by the Wales coach in autumn and also discovered a new lease of life by moving from wing to centre. Williams – whose own Wales career has been halted for the time being by back problems – has hailed the performance of North during Wales’ opening Six Nations victory over Ireland on Saturday.

Wales’s ice queen Laura Deas spearheads Britain’s women at the World Skeleton Championships in Germany starting on Thursday. The Wrexham-born slider is part of a six-strong GB squad for the championships in Altenberg as the clock continues to tick towards next year’s Winter Olympics in China.

The first golf club in the world to sign up to the R&A Women in Golf Charter continues to make a big impact on equality of golf in Wales. Curtis Cup host venue Conwy Golf Club in North Wales felt signing up would bring focus to efforts already in place, becoming the first club in Wales to have been awarded the Charter and – as it turned out – the first in the world.

Newport County manager Michael Flynn insists he will not sink too low after his side’s latest setback of an alarming slump that has seen them tumble down League Two. Three days after getting back on the horse with a first win in nine games, County slumped to shock defeat against Southend United. Having just about seen off the second worst team in the Football League last weekend, the next target for Flynn’s men was to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since the first week of December against the lowest ranked club in League Two.

Wrexham Supporters Trust have admitted their disappointment at not being able to return the club to the Football League. In a statement following the completion of the sale of the club to Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, the Trust says they have made significant progress but not achieved their ultimate aim. Reynolds and Elhenney have made a £2m investment in the club under the terms of the deal, some of which will be used for new players in a bid to win promotion from the National League.

Jordan Morris reckons he and fellow Swansea City recruit Paul Arriola could be the start of a new wave of American talent rolling into the UK. USA internationals Morris and Arriola could both be involved for Swansea’s FA Cup fifth-round home tie against Manchester City on Wednesday night. Striker Morris, signed on loan from MLS side Seattle Sounders, has come off the bench in Swansea’s last two league games and is in contention for a first start.

Dean Ryan has told his Dragons team they must not let a back row crisis deflect them from the need to bounce back against Edinburgh on Friday night. The Dragons, who are fifth in conference A, welcome the Scottish side to Newport with clear orders to make amends for their home defeat to Connacht last week. “I think it’s important that we build on last week. I don’t think it’s any secret, I was pretty disappointed with how we came out on quite a long spell,” said Ryan.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant broke the Welsh 1500m indoor record after obliterating her personal best by more than 10 seconds in France. The Welsh star clocked 4:04.79 in a remarkable race in Lievin that saw a new world record for  Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay and a British record for Scotland’s Laura Muir.

Mick McCarthy hailed Cardiff City’s fighting spirit insisting they can start looking up the table after a 2-1 victory at Rotherham United maintained their unbeaten record under him. Joe Bennett’s late winner after Sheyi Ojo’s opener had been cancelled out made it back-to-back away wins for the Bluebirds.

Carwyn Tuipulotu has committed his future to the Scarlets by signing a four-year deal and his first professional contract. The 19-year-old back-row, one of Welsh rugby’s bright young prospects, has made a big impression at Parc y Scarlets this season and came off the bench for his Guinness PRO14 debut against Leinster last month. The son of Tongan international Kati, Tuipulotu was educated at Sedbergh School in Cumbria before linking up with the Scarlets Academy from Newcastle Falcons two seasons ago.

The “Everest of the Seas” is how they bill the Vendee Globe, the most testing individual event in sailing. Welsh sailor Alex Thomson almost reached the summit four years ago and this time there was a place on the podium for another competitor with Welsh links as Graham Thomas reports. Welsh sailing can claim a hand in the making of Louis Burton, who came close to winning the prestigious Vendee Globe round the world yacht race, which finished in the final days of January. Born in Paris, Burton is a Frenchman but attributes his love of the sport to his Welsh father, Michael, who taught his two sons how to sail on family holidays to the Brittany coast.

Former Scarlets conditioning coach Aled Waters has revealed that getting out of Wales has opened his eyes to how players should prepare for top level rugby. Walters left his home region in 2009 and has since travelled the world, establishing himself as one of the most well-respected strength and conditioning coaches on the planet. Having spent time at Taranaki, the Brumbies and with Munster before helping South Africa lift the 2019 Rugby World Cup, he now finds himself with Leicester Tigers.

Steve Cooper has admitted he was always a keen student at the Pep Guardiola open university but is ambitious to topple the Manchester City professor on Wednesday night. Cooper’s Swansea City host Guardiola’s Premier League leaders in the FA Cup fifth round as the master and his enthusiastic apprentice meet for the first time. The Swans head coach has always been an admirer of Guardiola and has revealed he studied the Spaniard carefully when he was working for the FA as England U17 coach.

Rosie Eccles made a winning return to the ring at the Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Hungary. The Caldicot welterweight beat Italy’s Angela Carini by split decision in  Debrecen.

Nicky Maynard has repaid the first instalment on his loan fees and will be aiming to hand back more when Newport County host Southend on Tuesday night. Former Cardiff striker Maynard, 34, scored on his Newport County debut to end a run of nine games without a win for the former League Two front runners as they beat Grimsby, 1-0, at the weekend. County boss Michael Flynn stayed until 11.00pm on transfer deadline day to ensure he finally got his man in from Mansfield and then gave him his first start alongside former Bury striking partner Dom Telford. 

Geraint Thomas says the five-day Etoile de Bessèges race was the shock to the system he needed as he builds towards the Tour de France. The 34-year-old finished 49th overall – and joked that he almost got off his bike and ran the uphill sections of Sunday’s individual time trial.

Wales’ second most capped footballer Loren Dykes has announced her retirement from playing. Dykes – who brought her Women’s Super League career to an end last year – has been playing for Cardiff City Ladies in the English FA Women’s National league South. But the 33-year-old – who won 105 caps – has opted to concentrate solely on coaching in her roles with both Bristol City and the Wales U15s.
