Charlotte Carey fought to the end but finally saw her Olympic dream ended after another seven game thriller in Portugal. The 24-year-old lost her second phase European Singles Qualification Tournament to Bulgaria’s Polina Trifonova, who had ended her fellow Brit Tin-Tin Ho’s Tokyo hopes in the first phase of the competition.
An inspired performance from Michael Wilde helped Connah’s Quay overcome The New Saints and move three points clear at the top of the JD Cymru Premier. Wilde’s first-half hat-trick left The New Saints stunned with Anthony Limbrick’s side unable to recover as they conceded ground in what is proving to be an enthralling title race. […]
Elfyn Evans is heading for his second podium of the season – and aims to be on the top step at Rally Croatia on Sunday. The Dolgellau-born ace goes into Sunday’s final four stages lying in second place in a three-man battle for the top step.
The Rainbow Cup is spreading over Welsh rugby this weekend for the first time. It’s not a perfect tournament and the rivalries lack context says Harri Morgan, but it’s the best we have at present and at least it’s not been constructed with the idea of fleecing a global fan base. Remember The Racoons? The who?
Rob Page has won over Wales supporters, gained the public approval of his players, and now received confirmation from the Football Association of Wales he will be in charge of his county at the Euros this summer. The announcement came on Friday afternoon within minutes of the news that Ryan Giggs had been charged with assaulting two women and controlling or coercive behaviour. Giggs will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court next Wednesday.
The Welsh regions return to action this weekend when the new Rainbow Cup tournament kicks off with two Welsh derbies. The Dragons were surging when the Guinness Pro 14 came to an end and captain Rhodri Williams is optimistic their charge can continue as he tells Graham Thomas. Rhodri Williams may have lost his position as leader of the Dragons’ West Wales car club – but he’s not ready to lose anything else this season. The scrum-half used to be the senior member of the car share group that ferried west-based players up the M4 to Newport.
The New Saints and Connah’s Quay will go head to head this weekend in the first of two crucial matches that will define the Cymru Premier title race (live on S4C, 5:15). Just goal difference separates the two sides ahead of Saturday’s top of the table clash at The New Saints’ Park Hall home, before […]
Charlotte Carey suffered her first defeat in the European Olympic Qualifying tournament in controversial fashion in Portugal. The 24-year-old from Ebbw Vale had staged a superb comeback from 3-1 down in games against Portugal’s China-born world No 63 Jieni Shao in the quarter-finals.
Elfyn Evans is in the thick of a three-way battle for victory at the Croatia Rally. The 32-year-old from Dolgellau is third after the opening day but just eight seconds separates him from leader Thierry Neuville of Belgium.
Warren Abrahams insists he has kept faith in his squad – if not individual players – to deliver tomorrow in order for Wales Women to avoid an unwanted wooden spoon. The head coach is still searching for his first point on the board in the truncated Six Nations after heavy defeats to France (53-0) and Ireland (45-0). Abrahams has made nine changes for the match against the Scots at Scotstoun, but believes his team can prove they are not as poor as those two results suggest.
Drowned out, possibly, by all the noise over the European Super League was an announcement by Instagram this week that they had adopted new measures to combat online abuse. It was hardly a declaration of war, but it was something. Too little, though, to make a big difference – much like the clubs’ attitude, says Fraser Watson, who is fed up of the gestures and the apathy. The other morning was like any other for me. Woke up, trawled through social media, discovered a high profile individual in football had been subjected to online abuse, read about it, considered tweeting my disdain, decided it was futile, switched off from the subject, and did something else.
Wales Rugby League have named an extended 36-strong Women’s train-on squad as they prepare for the test match against England in Warrington on June 25. Nineteen players remain from the first ever squad in 2019, and 15 new players were selected following elite athlete ID days in both the north and south of Wales this month.
Charlotte Carey triumphed over another higher-ranked player to reach the next stage of the European Singles Olympic Qualification event in Portugal. The 24-year-old – the lowest seed in the three-woman group – ensured she topped Group B after beating Slovakia’s Tatiana Kukulkova.
Kris Jones swapped a year of running around Scottish industrial estates for the Cardiff International Sports Campus track as he won Welsh Athletics’ Invitational 5,000m on Wednesday night. The Dundee-based Swansea Harrier was in winning form as he returned to Wales for the event organised as part of the sport’s journey back to competition. Jones won the 5,000m in an impressive 13.49.33 considering the cool, blustery conditions and small field at the elite-only event, restricted to limited numbers due to Covid-19.
Kyra Jones has admitted she has a big test ahead of her after choosing to come out of retirement to resume her SuperLeague netball career. The former Wales international – who will be 36 in September – has joined Worcester-based Severn Stars who have lost another Wales international, Bethan Dyke, to a serious knee injury. Jones – who has proved a huge loss to the Celtic Dragons since opting to retire two years ago – has agreed a short-term arrangement to join the large Welsh contingent at Stars.
Elfyn Evans is ready to vent into the unknown when he resumes his World Rally Championships bid in Croatia this week. The Dolgellau-born racer gets his challenge underway with the opening stage on Friday on an event that is new to the WRC calendar.
Charlotte Carey staged a superb comeback to win her opening match in the European Singles Olympic qualifying tournament in Portugal. The Welsh table tennis star came from two games down to beat Italy’s Debora Vivarelli, who at 71 in the world is ranked 80 places higher than Carey.
Two late goals secured Connah’s Quay a precious three points against Bala Town to keep them level on points with The New Saints ahead of this weekend’s top of the table clash. The two title challengers face each other on Saturday in the first of two meetings before the end of the season with just […]
In Steve Cooper and Mark Warburton, you have two managers accustomed to managing sides on a low transfer budget. Therefore, it was little surprise that following QPR’s 1-0 win at the Liberty Stadium last night, courtesy of Lyndon Dykes’ late winner, the pair were scathing of the chaotic meldown caused by the European Super League (ESL) proposals. Cooper said: “Money can’t but culture,” whilst Warburton insisted “Twelve of Europe’s biggest clubs had made a grave error.”
Newport County manager Michael Flynn has patted his team on the back but moved them quickly on towards another key promotion decider on Saturday. Flynn saw his team boost their League Two play-off prospects with a 2-0 win over 10-man Crawley Town at Rodney Parade. The victory keeps County in seventh place in the table, and in the final play-off spot, but they would come under threat if they lose at Exeter City on Saturday who lay below them and are just three points adrift.
