By Rob Carbon Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel has told his players not to dwell on their six-try, 43-13 defeat to Munster, but focus on putting things right ahead of Friday night’s trip to face reigning champions Leinster in the United Rugby Championship. A Munster side showing 11 changes to the team that had comprehensively […]
Robert Page has told his Wales players they need to be more ruthless if they are to fulfill their World Cup ambition. Wales face Estonia in Tallinn on Monday night, desperate to score the goals that will see them overtake the Czech Republic in the fight to secure a play-off spot in qualification for next year’s finals. Page’s side drew 2-2 with the Czechs in Prague on Friday, so still trail their rivals on goal difference, even though they have a game in hand.
It’s almost certain that either Osian Pryce or Matt Edwards will be crowned British rally champion this year, and whilst both drivers were equally brilliant on the Mull Rally they each experienced a very different event as the longest and toughest round of the series played out on the Inner Hebridean island.
The Ferret has burrowed his way upwards to seventh in the world after Jonny Clayton’s victory over Gerwyn Price in the all-Welsh battle for the World Grand Prix title. Clayton – who continued his remarkable rise with a 5-1 victory over defending champion and good friend Price in Leicester – has gone up seven places from 14th to seventh in the new PDC Order of Merit. The new champion picked up a cheque for £110,000 after securing a third Professional Darts Corporation title of 2021, his first in a major ranking event.
Dragons’ man of the match Taine Basham admitted the frustration of losing to Leinster at Rodney Parade the previous weekend spurred his side on to notch their first win in Ireland since 2015. The 35-22 bonus-point victory over Connacht in Galway was not only the Dragons’ first competitive victory of the season, but also their first over Irish opposition since they beat Connacht 21-8 on 15 September, 2017. There had been 21 defeats and a single draw since then, but now the long wait is over after they triumphed at the Sportsground for the first time in 17 years.
By Paul Jones Defending champion Gerwyn Price set up an all-Welsh final at the World Grand Prix with a stunning 4-2 comeback victory over Stephen Bunting. World number one Price will meet compatriot Jonny Clayton in Saturday’s final in Leicester, but only after battling past Bunting in dramatic fashion. The 36-year-old reigning world champion trailed by two sets and returned to the oche late, complaining of twinges in his throwing arm.
Aaron Ramey has leapt to the defence of teammate Danny Ward after Wales earned a 2-2 draw against the Czech Republic in Friday’s World Cup qualifier. Wales fell 2-1 behind as goalkeeper Ward failed to control a back-pass and allowed the ball to go into his own net, but Daniel James scored a superb second-half equaliser – superbly crafted by substitute Harry Wilson – to earn a deserved share of the spoils. Ramsey, who netted Wales’ first strike of the night, heaped praise on Ward while also insisting that his team had secured a “great” result in in Group E.

Cardiff host the Bulls on Saturday night and for Neil Jenkins that means a throwback to a quarter of a century ago when the South Africans first came to Wales for tournament matches. Nowadays, though, the Wales assistant coach has his thoughts on the present as he tells Graham Thomas. Neil Jenkins believes the competitive addition of the top South African teams will raise standards in Wales as he sizes up the candidates for his old Wales No.10 jersey. The Wales assistant coach was in Swansea last weekend to see the Ospreys’ Gareth Anscombe go head-to-head with Rhys Priestland as Cardiff were edged out, 18-14.
By Tom Prosser Ospreys forward Adam Beard tested himself against South Africa whilst on British & Irish Lions duty this summer, but he is now looking forward to taking on The Sharks for his region this evening (Friday). The Ospreys are unbeaten so far this season after claiming wins against The Dragons and Cardiff Rugby, but The Sharks are still searching for their first victory in United Rugby Championship. “The South Africans come with a good set piece, but they also have some dangerous backs who like to have a go and play from anywhere,” explained Beard.

By Tom Prosser Welsh darts stars Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton were both victorious in their World Grand Prix Quarter-finals on Thursday evening and are now just one game away from potentially meeting each other in what would be the first ever all Welsh PDC major final. Price is now the only remaining seeded player in the tournament after beating the out of sorts Dave Chisnall 3-0. But, the world number one who hails from Markham, was far from happy with the boos he received from the crowd in Leicester.
Without injured Gareth Bale, Welsh hopes of goals in the Czech Republic on Friday night may well rest on the shoulders of Kieffer Moore. The Cardiff City striker has hardly enjoyed a prolific start to the season but Wales manager Rob Page insists he has kept faith, as he tells Graham Thomas. Kieffer Moore has been backed to rediscover his goalscoring touch by helping Wales move a step nearer World Cup qualification on Friday night. The Cardiff City striker has endured a lean season so far, with just one goal in 13 matches for his club following his 24 goals for club and country last season.
By Tom Prosser Wales and Juventus star Aaron Ramsey stressed the importance of being “managed correctly” ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Estonia. The Welsh playmaker has found game-time hard to come by due to a number of niggly muscle issues which have since seen him fall out of favour with Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri. During the last seven months, Ramsey has played more minutes for Wales than Juventus and hinted that his lack minutes have not helped matters related to his injury.
By Tom Prosser Premier League champion Jonny Clayton has joined his Welsh darting colleague Gerwyn Price in the Quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix. The former World Cup winning duo are now on a potential collision course to meet in the final. “I’m not thinking too much about that yet,” explained Clayton.
By Tom Prosser Connor Roberts says Aaron Ramsey’s inclusion in the Wales squad has given the whole team a “massive lift” ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Estonia. Ramsey has only featured in three league games for Juventus so far this season due to issues with his fitness and current club form. Since March, he has played more minutes for Wales (447) than Juventus (378). This is even more surprising when taking into account his withdrawal from Wales’ matches in September.
