It’s going to be an old pal’s act at Parc y Scarlets on Boxing Day, 5.30pm.
With both regions currently occupying the lower reaches of the BKT United Rugby Championship table, the stakes extend beyond local pride.
The match carries added significance amid ongoing discussions about the future structure of Welsh rugby, where only one west Wales franchise is expected to survive in the long term.
Scarlets head into the festive clash with renewed confidence following an eye-catching victory over Cardiff Rugby at the Arms Park last weekend, where they overcame the challenge of three yellow cards to secure the win.

That success followed a commanding 23-0 home triumph over Glasgow Warriors, lifting Peel’s side off the bottom of the standings.
With just five points separating the bottom seven teams, the congested nature of the table suggests momentum could shift rapidly in the coming weeks.
“I was thoroughly chuffed for the boys after the win in Cardiff, although I don’t think we were anywhere near our best,” said Peel.
“Defensively we put in a massive shift. The game was about moments, and we took those and managed to get over the line.
“You obviously won’t get away with having three yellow cards too often, but resilience and fight is something to measure the character of your team. We’ve spoken about being here to compete and we were competitive.

“We know we need to improve and we know we have the game to do that, but from a collective and fight perspective it was a good performance.
“The game against the Ospreys is full of tradition and with the two teams being so close, just across the bridge, it’s a rivalry that’s great for the community.
“We had a difficult start, and those home losses to Munster and the Stormers were tough, but the reality is they are two of the top sides in the league.
“We’ve also had a trip to South Africa and have played a game less than most teams.
“We’ve taken strides forward in the last month or so, so I’m not overly concerned about the league table at the moment – it is still early season.”
Scarlets will be led by Ryan Elias in the absence of injured skipper Josh Macleod.
Taine Plumtree and Archie Holtz return to the pack after regaining fitness, while Ellis Mee switches to full-back to cover for the sidelined Blair Murray.
For the visitors, Ospreys prop Rhys Henry is set to make his 50th appearance for the region, packing down alongside captain Dewi Lake and Steff Thomas in the front row.
Ross Moriarty returns at number eight after sitting out last weekend’s defeat to Munster.
There is also a strong Scarlets connection in the Ospreys backline, with former Llanelli favourites Ryan Conbeer starting on the wing and scrum-half Kieran Hardy facing familiar opposition in Gareth Davies, the latest Welsh international half-back to test himself against the experienced Scarlets number nine.
Jones believes discipline will be the defining factor in a contest where emotions traditionally run high.
“It is going to be about who can be the most disciplined team on the day. The best players live on the edge and somehow find a way to stay just on the right side of it,” said Jones.
“The Scarlets are our biggest rivals, and our job is to keep calm and stay accurate. It’s never nice being down the bottom of the table, but it’s still very early in the season and teams have had different runs of fixtures.”
With history, pride and league position all on the line, the Boxing Day derby promises intensity, passion and a reminder of why west Wales rivalries remain among the most fiercely contested in Welsh rugby.
