Morris’ Men are on a Roll as Newport Surge in Super Rygbi Cymru

Newport are on the march in the Super Rygbi Cymru.

Newport are on the march in the Super Rygbi Cymru.

Newport head coach Tyrone Morris has lavished praise on his players after they surged into the top four of Super Rygbi Cymru.

The Black and Ambers made it there after an emphatic 54-31 victory over RGC, continuing a dramatic turnaround in their title defence.

The reigning champions produced another ruthless attacking display at Newport Stadium, running in eight tries in a 12-try contest to make it six wins from their last seven matches.

The champions have now firmly rediscovered their rhythm after a stuttering start to the season, which saw them lose their opening five fixtures.

Morris was delighted with both the style and efficiency of Newport’s latest performance, particularly coming a week after they crossed for 12 tries in a crushing win over Aberavon.

“It was another excellent performance, particularly in attack,” said Newport head coach Morris.

“I’m really pleased with how clinical the boys are playing at the moment.

“Our set piece continues to be superb and has been a key building block in our recent results.

“Credit must also go to our attack coach, Gareth [Wyatt], who has us playing exciting, dangerous rugby regardless of the backline selected.”

Newport set the tone early, with scrum-half Dafydd Buckland touching down twice in the first half as the hosts raced into a commanding position.

Centre Harrison James and Chay Foster-Smith, deployed on the wing, also crossed before the break to help establish a 28-17 half-time lead, with Carwyn Penny converting all four tries.

RGC remained competitive during the opening period, with hooker Jac Petch-Jones and full-back Dion Jones replying for the visitors.

Billy McBryde added both conversions and a penalty to keep the scoreline respectable at the interval.

Any hopes of a comeback were quickly snuffed out after the restart as Newport continued to attack with pace and precision.

Wing Lloyd Lewis and flanker Hunter Ward both found space out wide, while centre Harri Ackerman struck twice to extend the advantage.

Penny added three more conversions as the champions pulled clear.

RGC did manage to finish strongly, with second-half tries from flanker Dafydd Thirsk and replacement Christian Hone, both converted by McBryde, ensuring the north Walians left with something to build on ahead of the return fixture at Parc Eirias on Saturday evening.

Elsewhere in Super Rygbi Cymru, Ebbw Vale strengthened their grip on top spot with a dominant 40-15 double bonus-point win over local rivals Pontypool at Eugene Cross Park.

The Steelmen, who have now claimed maximum points in nine of their 11 matches, recorded their 10th victory of the campaign and successfully defended the SRC Challenger Shield for a 14th time.

Captain Joe Franchi and centre Ethan Phillips both scored twice for Ebbw Vale, with wing Dafydd Thomas and outside-half Dorian Jones also crossing.

Jones was flawless from the tee, adding five conversions.

Pontypool replied through outside-half Harri Ford and replacement Pat Lewis, with Ford contributing five points from the boot.

The defeat marked a sixth consecutive loss for Pooler, who remain bottom ahead of Saturday’s return meeting at Pontypool Park.

Third-placed Cardiff also collected maximum points with an authoritative 49-12 success over Bridgend at the Arms Park.

The Blue and Blacks secured both bonus points, building a 28-12 lead by half-time thanks to a brace from blindside flanker Ben Fry and tries from hooker Alun Rees and scrum-half Ieuan Davies, all converted by Harri Wilde.

Bridgend briefly threatened when winger Mccauley Rowley and outside-half Ben Burnell scored, with Burnell also converting, but Cardiff dominated the second half.

Further tries from Osian Darwin-Lewis, Tom Howe and Joe Williams sealed the win, with Wilde and Steff Emanuel adding the conversions.

The sides meet again at the Brewery Field on Saturday.

At Broadacre, Swansea claimed a 37-22 victory over Aberavon to secure all six points.

Hooker Jamie Cox crossed either side of the interval, while Ieuan Bissell, Harri Houston, Josh Phillips and replacement flanker Luca Giannini also scored.

Phillips kicked two conversions and a penalty as Swansea recorded their fifth win of the season, already surpassing last year’s total.

Aberavon mounted a second-half response through tries from Saul Hurley, Ashton Evans and Jayden Grey, with Keillen Cullen adding seven points from the tee, but it was not enough to prevent a fifth straight defeat ahead of the return fixture at the Talbot Athletic Ground.
