Euros Evans Relishes Arms Park Return as Llandovery Prepare for Cardiff Showdown

Llandovery head coach Euros Evans says his players are relishing the chance to perform once again on one of Welsh rugby’s most iconic stages when they take on Cardiff at the Arms Park on Saturday.

The Drovers head to the capital top of the Super Rygbi Cymru table and full of confidence ahead of what promises to be another thrilling encounter between two of the most attack-minded sides in the competition.

With regional rugby on hold a week ahead of the start of Wales' November internationals, the domestic second tier gets a chance to step into the spotlight.

Evans admits that a trip to the Arms Park always holds special appeal for his team — not just because of Cardiff’s history, but also because of how the pitch and atmosphere suit Llandovery’s expansive style of play.

“We always look forward to playing against Cardiff because of the way they like to play the game. And it is always great to play at the home of such a big, historic club,” said Evans.

“They struggled early on this season with unavailability of certain players, but now they are back to their core side from last season and they look much more like the team that topped the table.

“Their artificial surface suits our style of play and it is great to see that the balance of both teams is what SRC is all about, with a blend of experience and young talent.”

Evans’ side will arrive in the capital with fond memories of their last visit, when they edged a remarkable 48-43 victory in a 14-try thriller.

Their three meetings last season produced an astonishing 235 points and 35 tries, with each game turning into a showcase of attacking rugby.

Both sides head into this weekend’s contest in good form. Cardiff, currently six points behind the league leaders but with a game in hand, remain firmly in the title race and will look to maintain the momentum from their emphatic win over Pontypool last time out.

Llandovery, meanwhile, continue to impress with their mix of seasoned pros and emerging young talent.

Centre Macs Page, who toured Japan with Wales in the summer, will line up alongside former international Adam Warren, while Jac Davies, Tomi Lewis and Steff-Jac Jones all bring pace and flair to the backline.

Jones, a Wales U19 international last season, will face off against a Cardiff midfield featuring Steff Emanuel and Osian Darwin-Lewis, both of whom represented Wales at U20 level.

On the Cardiff bench is Ben Coomer, a talented Wales U18 fly-half who continues to balance senior rugby with college duties at Coleg y Cymoedd.

Cardiff head coach Dan Fish was full of praise for his side’s display in their victory over Pontypool and hopes to see a similar intensity against the reigning SRC Cup holders.

“It was a great win last weekend. I asked the boys to be on it for 80 minutes, and they backed that up with a fantastic performance,” said Fish.

“We were solid at set piece on our ball and lineout defence was excellent, not allowing Pontypool a foothold in the game.

“We knew we needed to front up physically against a big Pooler pack and we did that and more.

“Our defence was excellent not allowing them to get front foot ball and that was backed up with real good discipline making it hard for them to implement their game on us.

“The pleasing thing for me was even though it was our best performance of the season, we still have things to build on, and we want to continue that this week against Llandovery.

“Games against Llandovery are always a good spectacle because both teams like to play quick have game breakers all over the field. We know they will pose a different challenge to that which we faced last week, and we have to work hard on shutting their key players down.

“We want to make sure we put our game onto them and not wait to see what they have got planned for us.”

With both sides boasting dangerous backlines and a shared desire to play positive, high-tempo rugby, the stage is set for another Arms Park classic.

Evans believes the venue itself adds to the occasion. Its history, atmosphere, and the surface all combine to make fixtures there among the highlights of the SRC calendar.

Saturday’s clash not only carries significance for the title race but also for the supporters, who have grown accustomed to drama whenever these two sides meet.

If past encounters are any indication, another try-fest could be on the cards.

Elsewhere in Super Rygbi Cymru, Ebbw Vale will look to bounce back from their first defeat of the season when they host Swansea, while Newport travel to Bridgend and Carmarthen Quins welcome RGC.
