There is one major issue still to be decided as the Super Rygbi Cymru Trophy league season reaches its conclusion this weekend — who will finish top of the table.

Ebbw Vale have set the pace for much of the campaign and head into their final fixture at Carmarthen Quins holding a three-point advantage over Cardiff, who travel to Swansea.

Despite leading for so long, Ebbw have faltered slightly in recent weeks, surrendering the SRC Challenger Shield to Newport and suffering three defeats in their last four matches.

Even so, they remain in control of their own destiny and will be determined to secure the SRC Pennant after setting the standard for most of the season.

Cardiff, however, are applying late pressure. They are unbeaten this year and arrive in Swansea on the back of eight consecutive victories, including wins over all of the other leading sides in the division.

Their task is clear — collect a maximum six points and hope Ebbw Vale slip up in Carmarthen.

Regardless of the outcome, Cardiff have already guaranteed themselves a home tie in the play-off quarter-finals and, if they progress, the semi-finals as well.

“We’ve been excellent over the last couple of weeks and want to finish the season strong heading into the play-offs,” said Cardiff head coach Dan Fish.

“We want to keep our performance level high and finish with a bang,”

“We’ve certainly go a tough one to finish in Swansea. We know the threat they pose as they beat us in the reverse fixture.”

“We showed fight on both sides of the ball last time out against Newport in what was a great advert for the SRC. There were two teams going after each other from minute one.”

Elsewhere, Newport secured third place after edging out Pontypool 31-29 in a dramatic Gwent derby at Rodney Parade, with both teams crossing for five tries in a high-quality encounter.

Captain Ben Roach was relieved to see his side hold on, ensuring they retained the Challenger Shield.

Attention now turns to the race for fourth place, where Llandovery are best placed.

They sit four points clear of Swansea ahead of their trip to Aberavon and are in pole position to secure a home quarter-final.

Aberavon, meanwhile, have climbed into eighth after successive wins over Carmarthen Quins and Pontypool. They will remain there unless Bridgend can overturn a two-point deficit by winning away at RGC.

RGC themselves are targeting a fourth straight victory as they look to climb from sixth, currently four points behind Swansea.

With positions still to be finalised across the table, the final round promises plenty of drama — but the biggest prize remains the battle at the top.
