Kiran Carlson Praises Bold Glamorgan Effort in Brave New World of Division One

Kiran Carlson stood firmly by his bold declaration and praised his side’s all-round effort after Glamorgan’s dramatic, momentum-shifting draw with Yorkshire at Sophia Gardens.

In his first match as permanent red-ball captain, Carlson’s decision to declare shortly before lunch on the final day—setting Yorkshire 295 from 68 overs—set up a result, even if his side ultimately fell short of forcing victory.

“The declaration was about the number of overs left in the day and giving ourselves enough overs to bowl them out. I think we had enough runs, they had a very good batting lineup but we backed ourselves on a slow wicket.”

Carlson’s call injected life into a game heavily affected by lost time earlier in the match, and for long periods it looked inspired. Yorkshire surged early in the chase, reaching 125 for 1, before Glamorgan fought back to leave the visitors wobbling at 174 for 5.

Despite a late push with the ball—led by Mason Crane and debutant Ryan Hadley—Yorkshire held on to finish 239 for 7, 56 runs short of their target.

Carlson took plenty of positives from a contest that swung repeatedly over four days.

“A pretty good four days of cricket with ebbs and flows, (against) a strong team and we put up a good fight throughout the game and were in a position to win today which was great.

“Unfortunately we couldn't quite get over the line but a lot of people performed, so there are good signs for the rest of the season.”

Hadley, in particular, caught thAe captain’s eye with a key late spell that briefly threatened to turn the match Glamorgan’s way.

“I was really impressed with Ryan Hadley, he's fitted into the group really well, and his skillset on a flat wicket was awesome.”

Earlier, Carlson had led from the front with a half-century alongside Colin Ingram, whose second significant contribution of the match helped Glamorgan build a platform before that eye-catching declaration.

Yorkshire’s reply was anchored by Adam Lyth, who fell just short of a century with 97, while partnerships either side of tea briefly put the visitors on course for an unlikely win.

But Glamorgan’s bowlers, particularly Crane and Hadley, ensured the game remained alive deep into the final session, with wickets after tea halting Yorkshire’s momentum.

Visiting coach Anthony McGrath admitted his side had not been at their best, though he saw encouragement in the way they avoided defeat.

“We've not been at our best in this game, particularly with the bat. I thought at tea we still had a chance; it was probably our best period of the game with those partnerships between Lyth and Bean and Sam Whiteman.

“We felt as though if we could bat well the first 10 overs after tea we could put our foot down, but as we did in the first innings we lost soft wickets which didn't allow us to push on.

“I said to the lads just now, 'last year we might've gone on to lose that game' so the way we approached the chase I'm happy with.

“[Bairstow's injury] is just one of them things. Luckily the injury-sub rule is in place so Luxy [Will Luxton] could come in and Beany did an outstanding job behind the stumps. I don't think it's as bad as it could've been, so hopefully he [Bairstow] can play against Sussex [the match after next].”

In the end, Carlson’s aggressive approach ensured an entertaining opener to the County Championship season—one that underlined his intent as captain, even if victory narrowly eluded his side.

Glamorgan 302 and 218 for 5 (Ingram 75, Bess 4-87) drew with Yorkshire 226 (Revis 50, Crane 5-55) and 239 for 7 (Lyth 97, Hadley 3-35)
