Wrexham AFC’s fans have voted overwhelmingly in favour of allowing talks that could lead to the takeover of the club.

The Wrexham Supporters Trust gave their backing for talks with ‘two extremely well-known individuals of high net worth’ who are keen to immediately plough in £2million.

But the talks are set to take place amid uncertainty over whether the National League season will start on 3rd October as planned or even be scrapped given the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

A total of 1,223 WST members – the club has been in fan ownership since 2011 – voted for the move and 31 against at Tuesday’s special general meeting.

After the SGM the Trust issued a statement: “The WST Board will now proceed with talks, and will update members on the next steps as soon as possible.”

A sale can only go ahead if it is approved at a later SGM.

But the season start is now shrouded in uncertainty after the government scrapped plans for fans to be able to return to watch live action from 1 October.

There are fears several clubs could go bust if the season goes ahead behind closed doors which would leave the National League in chaos.

Deak Keates’ side are due to start the campaign against Boreham Wood at the Racecourse Ground on 3 October.
