Welsh Premier League Gang Can Ignite Craig Bellamy's World Cup Bid

The Premier League starts on Friday night and for Wales manager Craig Bellamy, it's going to be essential viewing, as Ian Mitchelmore reports.

The English Football League season may be well under way, but now Craig Bellamy is set to enjoy plenty of Premier League action during the course of the 2025-26 campaign.

The 46-year-old Wales manager will once again be able to cast his eye over the likes of Tottenham Hotspur duo Brennan Johnson and Ben Davies, along with Fulham's Harry Wilson in the top-flight.

But Leeds United's promotion from the Championship has played a significant role in ensuring 12 of the 27 players selected by Bellamy in the last international camp for World Cup qualifiers with Liechtenstein and Belgium are currently involved with English top-flight sides heading into the new season.

So, it will come as no surprise to see either Bellamy or members of his coaching staff at Elland Road this term - with Daniel James, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and Karl Darlow involved under Daniel Farke.

Of that quartet, goalkeeper Darlow - who ousted Illan Meslier in the final stages of his side's promotion run-in having already overtaken Danny Ward in the pecking order with Wales - appears the least likely to feature for the Whites following the signing of Brazilian Lucas Perri from Lyon.

However, Leeds have had plenty of injury concerns, with Perri still rehabbing after arriving at the club with a minor injury, while winger James has also had issues in pre-season.

Fortunately for Bellamy, Leeds' Welsh contingent all have prior Premier League experience - but the step up in qualityonce more will only prove beneficial as the Red Dragons continue their quest to qualify for next summer's global showpiece in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

Spurs pair Davies and Johnson will certainly be bidding for an improved League campaign having finished 17th under Ange Postecoglou last time out.

They go into their first season under the tutelage of former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, and having collected European silverware last season, the Welsh pair know the club has the potential to vastly improve on their domestic efforts.

Having agreed a one-year contract extension, Davies is likely to play a bit-part role while it remains to be seen exactly how Johnson will be deployed by Frank.

But the latter's case was certainly strengthened by the fact he was Spurs' top scorer in 2024-25 with 18 goals.

Frank's penchant for improving players, especially forwards, should also bode well for Johnson.

There is much intrigue surrounding Wilson, given his inability to get regular starts under Marco Silva at Fulham last season.
The 28-year-old - who is now contracted at Craven Cottage until next summer - proved to be a vital squad player for the Cottagers but will undoubtedly want more minutes.

That said, he well and truly shone on the international stage and has arguably been the stand-out performer of the Bellamy era so far.

European football beckons for Neco Williams following a sublime campaign with Nottingham Forest.

The 47-cap full-back has been recovering from an ankle injury over the summer but will likely play a prominent role having started each of Forest's final 24 league matches last season.

Like Leeds' Welsh contingent, Connor Roberts also tasted automatic promotion from the second tier earlier this year.
And having flirted with the idea of a romantic Swansea City return, the right-back signed a new deal to remain with the Clarets until 2027 - starting all but six of Burnley's 46 Championship matches as they joined Leeds in ending the campaign with a century of points.

Kyle Walker's switch to Turf Moor from Man City could spell trouble for the Welshman though, so Roberts' situation may well fluctuate as the campaign goes on.

Elsewhere, there are question marks surrounding Bournemouth duo David Brooks and Chris Mepham.

The latter appears destined to secure a move away from the Vitality Stadium having spent last season on loan at Sunderland - who he helped gain promotion via the play-offs.

As for Brooks, injuries and the aftermath of his cancer diagnosis and successfult treatment have inevitably hampered his progress over recent years.

But having not featured in seven of the Cherries' first eight league games last season, the winger went on to play in 28 of Bournemouth's final 30 top-flight fixtures of the campaign.

He recently entered the final year of his contract with Andoni Iraola's side and has been touted with a move away from the club this summer - with West Brom among the clubs linked to the 28-year-old.

Should he depart, Brooks will have plenty of suitors, although he remains fully capable of playing a key role in helping Bournemouth challenge for Europe again.

Elsewhere, Lewis Koumas will almost certainly leave Liverpool on loan having been at Stoke last season.

Wrexham are among the clubs to have shown an interest in the 19-year-old - who has won six senior Wales caps since making his debut against Gibraltar in June 2024.

The fortunes of Wales' Premier League contingent will undoubtedly be mixed this season, but the fact Bellamy will have so much talent to pore over in the top-flight represents a real boon for the boss.
