Neil Taylor faces more than a one game ban for Wales after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings into his tackle of Seamus Coleman.
The Aston Villa left-back, 28, will miss the vital World Cup qualifier in Serbia in June after his sending off against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.
But if the automatic one match ban is extended – and a three game ban has been mooted – then the ex-Swansea defender would also miss September’s double header against Austria and Moldova.
The FAW have been informed by FIFA of the proceedings and the world governing body are awaiting the report of referee Nicola Rizzoli.
The hearing is expected to take place within the next fortnight.
Coleman, 28, faces months out of action after the double leg break following the 69th minute tackle in the 0-0 draw.
The Everton defender has now left hospital following an operation to begin his long recovery process.
Wales captain Ashley Williams and Coleman’s Everton club-mate has revealed that Taylor wanted to see his opponent in hospital, and sent him a text message from the Aviva Stadium.
“Neil was gutted. He was sitting on the floor virtually in tears,” said the ex-Swansea centre-back.
“Even people who don’t know Seamus like I do were gutted.
“He asked me to check if it would be OK to go to see Seamus in hospital. He got his number off me and sent him a text straight away.
“When I found out it was a broken leg it made me feel sick inside because it’s someone who I like so much and is one of my mates.”
