So, Farewell James McClean . . . Beer-Drinker, Hellraiser, Winner for Wrexham

"Running down the wing. Hear the Wrexham sing” . . . James McClean has gone but Ian Mitchelmore says he will not easily be forgotten.

Abba's iconic hit Voulez Vous may well have played in the minds of Wrexham supporters on loop over the past few days following the announcement that club icon James McClean had departed the Stok Cae Ras.

The former Republic of Ireland international has returned to hometown club Derry City - where he will see out the remainder of what has been a highly successful career for the versatile wing-back.

For all of the club heroes who have come and gone  during the Red Dragons' remarkable rise from the National League to the Championship - Ollie Palmer, Ben Tozer and Jordan Davies to name just a few - few exits would have hit hard with fans like that of McClean's.

The 36-year-old left north Wales having made 108 appearances for Phil Parkinson's side, scoring eight goals.

But the true extent of his contribution to the club can not be stated by statistics alone. It was what he provided in energy and ambition.

During his second spell with Wigan Athletic, McClean helped the Latics gain promotion into the Championship, although they slipped back down into the third tier the following season.

McClean then made the bold choice to drop down a division further to join Wrexham who had just ended their agonising 15-year stay in non-league by gaining promotion to League Two in 2023.

He swiftly established himself as a mentor, a leader, and a pivotal member of a squad that would go on to claim a further two promotions in succession.

It was notable that, when fit, he started every single league match (37 times in total) for Wrexham in his debut campaign at the club.

He brought top-level experience and quality to the fourth tier too, ending the 2023-24 promotion-winning season with three goals, the first of which was a crucial winner at Swindon Town on Boxing Day, and 10 assists in League Two.

Having already been appointed club captain, McClean's influence was monumental again in League One as he contributed six assists and four goals as Parkinson's side clinched second place behind champions Birmingham City.

He impact also featured a rip-roaring display where he netted twice and claimed an assist in a 4-1 win over Northampton Town as the Red Dragons fully demonstrated their capabilities in the third tier.

Bu his influence waned in the opening half of the 2025-26 season after Wrexham's squad underwent a major overhaul as they looked to raise the levels for their first season in the second tier in more than four decades.

And Parkinson's assessment of McClean's current situation was as honest as it was fair.

“I had a good chat with Jimmy last week. The time is right for him and his family. He always wanted to settle back in his hometown and he has the opportunity to finish his career there," said the Wrexham manager.

So often a controversial figure on and off the pitch, McClean was adored by the Wrexham faithful, not just because of his footballing qualities, but largely, too, because of his authenticity.

From catching and sipping a pint hurled in his direction by a Birmingham City fan at St Andrews, to immediately taunting Wimbledon supporters at the Stok Cae Ras after his corner was headed home by Steven Fletcher, McClean's antics always made him a Marmite character.

But as far as Wrexham were concerned, it was always a feeling that 'McClean is one of us'.

He seemed to understand and enjoy Wrexham’s outlier status and rebel spirit, which reflected his own independent streak.

It was fitting that even the man himself struggled to find the perfect way to say farewell.

"Been going over and over in my head to try to somehow put into words what this club Wrexham has meant to me since I signed and, truth be told, no matter what words I write, it won't do justice to express the feeling," the Irishman wrote on Instagram.

He was quick to thank all connected to the club, including Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac who sanctioned his signing back in 2023.

And even in his own emotional moment, McClean showed a level of understanding that while his time at the club was done, Wrexham's journey is nowhere near completed.

"My only regret is I couldn't have been a few years younger when joining this journey because this club is only going to go on and create more magic, but that's football," he added.

"It's been a real honour and a real pleasure and I wish you nothing but further success because the squad has real quality here to achieve this.

"Up the history-making back-to-back-to-back Red Dragons."
