Phil Parkinson Hits Back at Critics As Wrexham Prove Their Championship Worth

Phil Parkinson has taken a swipe at his critics by spelling out Wrexham’s attacking threat after their “statement” win over Coventry City.

The Dragons manager insists his side are “not here to stop the opposition” after watching his team produce what he described as a “statement performance and win” to end Coventry City’s unbeaten start to the Championship season.

A stunning second-half hat-trick from Wales international Kieffer Moore inspired Wrexham to a 3-2 victory over Frank Lampard’s league leaders — a result that not only lifted the newly promoted side to 11th in the table, but also sent a clear message about their ambitions at this level.

“It’s definitely a statement performance and win for us,” said Parkinson. 

“We’ve had some terrific performances, but I’m very pleased because this was against an excellent side. 

“If you look at Coventry’s stats, not just the wins, they’re at the top of everything.”

For much of the evening, it looked as though Coventry’s march toward a seventh straight league win — a club record — would continue. 

Ephron Mason-Clark gave the visitors a deserved first-half lead, slotting home midway through the opening 45 minutes. 

But the game was turned on its head after the break as Wrexham, urged on by a raucous home crowd, hit back with attacking purpose and belief.

Moore, who joined the club in the summer, levelled the score with a precise header before rifling in a right-foot finish just nine minutes later. 

His third — a crisp left-foot strike from another Josh Windass assist — sealed his first hat-trick since 2018 and capped a sensational individual display.

Coventry substitute Tatsuhiro Sakamoto curled in a late goal to set up a tense finale, but Wrexham held firm to record their most significant league win of the season so far.

Parkinson, whose side had been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League One Cardiff City just three days earlier, was delighted with the character shown by his players to respond in such emphatic fashion.

“I keep saying to everyone, we’re not here to stop the opposition,” he said. 

“We’re here to play in a disciplined manner without the ball. But I’ve got great belief in these players and some of the football we played was at a very high level. 

“In fairness to the crowd, they clapped the team off at half-time and you could sense that positivity coming out in the second half. The lads have responded in terrific fashion.”

Moore has now score nine goals in all competitions for Wrexham this season and the Wales striker believes his team can keep climbing the table to reach the play-offs.

"You only needed to look at the squad we've assembled, a lot of these lads have been playing at the top end of this league for years and a couple of us have played in the league above," said the 33-year-old.

"We're stacked in every position, we've got quality everywhere. Then you look at the league itself. I look at this team and say we can 100% be in those play-off positions.

"Who knows what can happen. For us as a team, we need to keep grounded, bring an intensity, work-rate and togetherness every time we step on the pitch and see where that takes us."

Parkinson made four changes from the side that drew at Middlesbrough the previous weekend — and nine from the team that lost to Cardiff — and his selections were fully vindicated. 

The returning players injected energy and purpose, with Windass instrumental in all three of Moore’s goals, while wing-backs Nuno Tavares and Liberato Cacace provided relentless width and drive.

Despite a mounting injury list that includes Lewis Brunt and Elliot Lee, Wrexham looked every bit a Championship team. 

Their performance was full of pace, discipline, and ambition — attributes that underline Parkinson’s insistence that his team are about more than containment.

For supporters, the win was a cathartic response to the midweek frustration of their cup exit. 

While some had questioned the rotation that preceded the defeat to Cardiff, the manager’s decision to freshen up the side paid off handsomely here.

Coventry boss Frank Lampard was quick to acknowledge that Wrexham had earned their win. 

“We dropped our standards a bit and when that happens you can lose a game,” he admitted. 

“You have to credit the opposition, they made it difficult for us, but even in the first half at 1-0 I felt we were a bit off it. 

“A game like this can run away from you, so it’s normal. The season’s not been normal so far, but unfortunately tonight it was.”

For Wrexham, the victory felt like a milestone — not just for the three points, but for the evidence it provided about how far they have come since their remarkable rise from League Two. 

This was not a backs-to-the-wall effort, but a confident and measured display that demonstrated they belong in the Championship.

In Moore, Wrexham have a proven goalscorer finding his rhythm, and in Parkinson, a manager determined to show that his side can play progressive, fearless football — not merely survive.
