Let’s Get it On . . . Wrexham and Cardiff City Both Keen to Crack on With Welsh Battle

Regardless of your stance on whether or not the fixture constitutes a derby, Wrexham's EFL Cup contest with Cardiff City represents a huge opportunity for the duo, writes Ian Mitchelmore.

 

The Tuesday night meeting at the Stok Cae Ras will be the first between the two clubs in more than two decades and will ensure that at least one Welsh team will feature in the quarter-finals of this season's competition.

It means there is far more than just bragging rights at stake in the battle between the north and the south of the country - the birthplace of Welsh football versus the nation's capital, if you like.

For Phil Parkinson's side, they have the chance to reach the last eight for only the third time in their history.

The same applies to the Bluebirds whose run to the 2011-12 final - where they suffered penalty shootout heartache against Liverpool at Wembley - was only the second time in their history that they had progressed beyond the fourth round.

While it is a fixture that will draw attention from around the globe, particularly as a result of Wrexham's ever-increasing American following, the game will rightly prove to be the sporting talking point throughout the nation in which the two clubs play.

Indeed, with Swansea City facing Man City on Wednesday night, Wales has three representatives at this stage of the competition for the first time ever.

And having avoided the 11 remaining Premier League clubs, Wrexham and Cardiff will both view tonight's contest as an opportunity to progress and potentially set-up a mouth-watering last eight meeting with a top-flight side.

For both Parkinson and Brian Barry-Murphy, the focus has not been on who holds the tag of being favourites, nor has it been on the stamp of it being a Welsh derby.

It merely represents a golden opportunity to show just how far they have come, and where exactly they are in their respective journeys.

"All we're concentrating on is our performance level and picking the team and bench we feel can give our fans the bragging rights in this Welsh derby," said Parkinson.

As for Cardiff boss Barry-Murphy, he said: "Our squad we believe is very capable of competing with teams who are at Championship level. So now we get a chance to go on Tuesday and show them, and that's where our intention will be."

More than 10,000 supporters, around 1,200 of which will be wearing blue in the away end, will pack out the iconic Stok Cae Ras to watch two of Wales' four EFL clubs go to battle.

Many could argue that the focus of both teams remains on their league progress, with Wrexham determined to rise up the Championship table with an eye on their long-term aim of reaching the Premier League in mind and Cardiff targeting an immediate return to the second tier.

But the golden ticket of a possible plum tie against Premier League opposition, and the financial rewards that would come with that, are also tantalising to both.

Parkinson himself arguably put it best.

"With cup competitions, I've always tried, since I've been here or wherever I've been, to get through and take them seriously because they give you a welcome break and they add excitement as well," he said.

"This is a great example of that. We've worked hard to get to this stage. 

"We want to really enjoy the experience because it's unique because it hasn't happened for so long. One, being in this stage of the competition and two, it being against Cardiff.

"So we're here to make the most of the evening."

One of these two sides will have their attention transfixed on Wednesday night's last eight draw, as will the fans of the successful club as they plan for what lies in wait.

So, Welsh derby or not, it promises to be a special night in north Wales.
