Consistency has been key as far as Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is concerned, reports Ian Mitchelmore.

While ultimately left feeling somewhat frustrated not to clinch all three points against Derby last time out, the 1-1 draw with the Rams stretched Wrexham's unbeaten run to three matches.

It also means the north Wales club have lost just once in their last six matches in all competitions as they continue to show signs of progress in what is their first campaign in the second tier since 1981-82.

Their squad underwent a major overhaul in the summer, a necessity from the club's perspective given they had gone from being a National League club to competing in the Championship in just three years.

And a significant number of their 13 summer signings are already making their mark at the Stok Cae Ras.

Despite struggling with an ankle issue, Kieffer Moore has been one of the shining lights of the division since his move from Sheffield United.

The striker has scored four goals and claimed an assist in the Championship while he also netted a last-gasp winner in the EFL Cup at Preston.

But his all-round hold-up and link-up play has been exemplary, which will no doubt be music to the ears of Wales boss Craig Bellamy.

Lewis O'Brien has also made a sublime impact since joining from Nottingham Forest and has even been a somewhat unlikely source of goals - with his header against Derby being his third goal of the campaign.

The 26-year-old's energy and guile in possession have been pivotal in the middle of the park, while he is also now being complemented by deadline day arrival Ben Sheaf who has wasted no time in showing why Wrexham were willing to fork out around £6.5m to sign the midfielder from Coventry.

Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead have both recently returned from spells on the sidelines through injury to bolster Parkinson's attacking options.

Windass delivered a fine individual display that included two goals as he came back from a hamstring injury with a bang to help Wrexham win 3-2 at Norwich - netting his first brace since February 2023 in the process.

Bangor-born Broadhead thought he had achieved the same feat in the third round EFL Cup win against Reading, although his second goal was later awarded to Sam Smith by the dubious goals panel.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old got his account up and running against the Royals - with Parkinson likely hoping the effort will ease any early pressure placed on the shoulders of the club's record signing.

Goalkeeper Danny Ward and left wing-back Liberato Cacace both showed impressive signs before suffering injuries while George Thomason has been gently eased into the first team fold having been unavailable earlier on due to a thigh problem.

Elsewhere, Conor Coady, Ryan Hardie, Dom Hyam and Callum Doyle have all had game time as Wrexham's squad now looks like one capable of competing in the Championship.

But after two eye-catching displays, there is one man in particular who appears intent on stamping his authority on what is a new-look team.

Issa Kabore capped off a fine performance with a sumptuous assist for O'Brien against Derby to add to the two he got on his debut at Norwich.

His relentless nature earned praise from boss Parkinson after the Derby fixture, and he has already become a real hit with fans, as evidenced by the reception he received when being greeted by supporters as he left the pitch late on in the draw with Derby.

"He plays with a real heart and commitment," Parkinson said of Kabore.

"When we watched him, I really liked that about him.

"He runs back as quickly as he goes forward.

"He's tenacious, he wants to win and he's a great signing for us."

Many rivals scoffed at the Welsh side's summer spend - with the net figure of around £30m being among Europe's elite.

But even at this early stage of the campaign, the key decision makers at the Stok Cae Ras can take huge encouragement from the deals they got over the line in the aftermath of their promotion from League One.
