Mark Beck, Harrogate Town’s 6ft 5ins striker, ended Wrexham AFC’s FA Trophy ambitions at the first hurdle.

Sunderland-born Beck, 23, scored both Harrogate goals in a 2-0 win at The Racecourse.

Wrexham manager Dean Keates would have loved a trophy run, but the priority for Wrexham is promotion to the Football League.

They are currently joint second in the Vanarama National League on 42 points from 24 games, two points behind leaders Macclesfield United. Sutton United are level on points with Wrexham and have the same goal difference.

Their next League fixture is at home against Kent club Dover Athletic next Saturday (3pm).

Beck failed to score in 11 appearances on loan at Wrexham during 2016, but headed the visitors in front after 41 minutes. He climbed above Doug Tharme to head home from George Thomson’s cross.

His second come after 69 minutes when he was left unmarked at the far post and netted with his head from Ryan Fallowfield’s cross.

Wales under-21 international goalkeeper Christian Dibble, the son of Cardiff City coach Andy, could do nothing to stop either goal.

Wrexham’s Cameron McGregor hit the woodwork, but Harrogate, from the division below Wrexham, held on to win in this first ever match between the clubs.

Keates underlined that League success is the main factor this season by making changes to his starting line-up and resting key players.

New signing Ferdinand Takyi, a striker born in Germany, was given the go-ahead to be involved when he was granted international clearance after making the move from Bognor Regis Town.

He went on from the bench after 52 minutes and set up a chance for McGregor, but his effort struck a pst.

Wrexham (4-4-2): Dibble; Roberts, Tharme, Hurst, Williams; Mackreth, Carrington, Boden (Takyi 52), Leo Smith (McGregor 78); Massanka (Burrows 52), Miller. Subs not used: Dunn, Barratt.
