Brian Barry-Murphy Insists Cardiff City Will Learn the Lessons of Top Spot Stumble

Cardiff City boss Brian Barry-Murphy has admitted his side’s failure to take their chances has cost them their place at the top of League One.

That faultline proved decisive as Cardiff surrendered the summit with a 3-1 home defeat to Bradford City.

In a meeting billed as an early-season marker between two of the division’s form sides, the Bluebirds saw their unbeaten start unravel as Graham Alexander’s streetwise visitors punished defensive lapses and moved to the summit.

It was Cardiff’s first defeat under Barry-Murphy, and one the manager was quick to frame as a harsh but valuable lesson for his young squad.

“We created some clear-cut chances and we didn’t take them. If you don’t take your chances in a game of this magnitude then you aren’t going to win,” said Barry-Murphy.

“We didn’t defend well enough to give ourselves the chance of winning. The first goal was a rocket from outside the box and the second goal took the momentum away from us.

“There were certain things I was looking for in the second half in terms of how the players attacked. They never gave in and that’s probably the most important thing for me to see moving forward.”

The result lifted Bradford to the League One leadership, while Cardiff dropped to fourth – three points behind, albeit with a game in hand.

The contest pitted Cardiff’s miserly defence – just two goals conceded all season before Saturday, both from the penalty spot – against a Bradford side who had lost only once.

But where the Bluebirds had looked compact and composed in recent weeks, here they were stretched, careless and ultimately undone.

Barry-Murphy admitted his team had been naive in key moments, particularly after Callum Robinson pulled a goal back late on to hint at a fightback.

“I think it’s naturally very disappointing when you lose a game that’s been billed as a top-of-the-table clash,” he said.

“We had some really, really good chances close to the goal which were better than we had in the previous weeks and we just didn’t take them today.

“If you don’t take those chances in the game of this magnitude, you’re really reliant on being watertight at the back.

“And I think from front to back, we didn’t defend well enough today to give ourselves a chance to win the game.”

Robinson’s strike 13 minutes from time gave Cardiff hope, but they allowed the visitors to kill the game with a string of stoppages

“We want to be an aggressive team who are on the front foot, but it’s not an excuse to give needless or reckless fouls,” Barry-Murphy added.

“When Callum scored, there was a really good atmosphere and I was really keen to get another opportunity to enter the box and put Bradford under pressure and see if they could defend it.

“But we were quite naive and allowed Bradford take the sting out the game. And that’s just important for us to understand how to chase the game when we are there.”

Barry-Murphy was at pains to stress, however, that reaction to this first defeat in charge should be more about perspective than panic.

“I believe in the talent we have in the dressing room. We don’t go looking for defeats or for setbacks, but it’s inevitable it’s going to happen,” he said.

“Our dressing room has to become very calm in these situations because we know what we’re working on individually and the players are improving – but it isn’t going to be without bumps in the road.

“I watched really closely for clear signs in the second half of the behaviour from our team. Days like this can teach you more than any victory does, but you have to go through that to know it.

“You have to be so focused on how you improve week to week that it can’t change based on what happens in the results.”

For Bradford boss Alexander, the win was evidence of his side’s growing maturity at the top end of the table.

“It was an impressive performance. We came here on the back of a good win at Doncaster last week to play a team that was unbeaten and the attitude of the players was really good,” he said.

“Cardiff are a really good team with a lot of good players and they can hurt you. There were moments when they got through us, but we stood strong in the final third.

“But we know the power we have going forward and I thought we could have had a few more with a little bit more care. But to win 3-1 away from home is a brilliant result for us.

“It was a game between two pretty good teams and I think we deserved to come out on top. Our attacking threat, allied to our defensive work, was superb.”

Alexander warned his squad against complacency.

“We are only eight games into the season and miles away from the finishing line, so we won’t be getting carried away,” he said.
