Brennan Johnson Has The Gift Of Goals . . . But Maybe He Needs More Devil

Brennan Johnson has the goal touch that makes him a key figure for Tottenham and Wales, but debate surrounds whether he has the ruthless streak of a natural born winner.

Ange Postecoglou has cut a forlorn figure on numerous occasions during the course of the 2024-25 season.

But the Australian was in a far happier mood as his Tottenham Hotspur side beat bottom club Southampton 3-1 to end their four-game winless streak in the Premier League - relegating the south coast side in the process.

Wales international Brennan Johnson netted twice as Spurs rose to the lofty heights of 14th in the top-flight.

The 23-year-old has been one of the shining lights in what has been a bitterly frustrating campaign for the white and black half of north London.

His goal tally for club and country this term now stands at 18, with his 16 goals across all competitions being comfortably the most of any Spurs player in 2024-25.

Johnson was unfortunate not to have added an additional goal in the triumph against the Saints.

The winger won the hosts a penalty after being fouled by Welington in added time and wanted to take the spot-kick himself to complete what would have been his first ever Premier League hat-trick.

But he looked angered as Mathys Tel - on loan from Bayern Munich - nabbed the match ball before netting from the spot to score his first goal for the club.

And former Watford striker Troy Deeney was less than impressed with Tel's decision to deny Johnson the chance to complete his hat-trick.

"He'd (Johnson) just won the penalty as well. I don't like this for the team in general," Deeney said on Match of the Day 2.

"He's asking for it, he should be taking it if you're a goal scorer.

"This is more about the individual than the team. That's why I don't like it.

"Brennan Johnson, you can see he is frustrated.

"There's not many times you get to score a Premier League hat-trick.

"The designated penalty taker wasn't on. If I'm Brennan Johnson I'm saying 'that's mine, I won it, do one'."

Johnson may well develop a more ruthless streak as his career progresses, but his efforts are certainly pleasing Postecoglou, and rightly so.

Discussing the Welshman, the Spurs boss said: "He's important for us. As a wide player, there aren't many around that are a constant goal threat like he is."

His latest exploits mean Johnson now has 10 one touch goals, excluding penalties, in the Premier League this season. Only Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Nottingham Forest's Chris Wood have more (both 11).

He is also the first Tottenham player to score 15+ goals in all competitions in a season, other than Harry Kane or Son Heung-min, since fellow Welshman Gareth Bale during the 2020-21 campaign.

Wales boss Craig Bellamy is understandably a huge admirer of the wideman.

Johnson has featured in seven of the eight games the national side have played under Bellamy so far, with his sole absence - against Montenegro - being due to suspension.

And Bellamy opened up on how he used Arsenal's Raheem Sterling as an example for Johnson to follow when it comes to causing problems in front of goal, adding that he is confident the future is bright for the winger.

"In September when we first met up, whether he liked it or not, we showed him a lot of Raheem Sterling's finishing, just about his positioning," Bellamy told Monday Night Football.

"I'd class him as a young player in the development stage, especially in that pool of where I see him, there's loads he can improve on.

"Even with us in Wales, there's a big part of his game he can improve.

"Is he willing to do it?

"I believe he has the attributes to be a really top player. I believe he has that capability and mindset. I believe we'll see a lot more from him."

And the man himself?

"It was a target for me at the start of the season to score more goals than I did last season," Johnson said ahead of Tottenham's Europa League quarter-final first leg clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

"There's a lot of work that goes into it positionally and the types of finishes that I want to improve at. 16 goals is something that I'm very happy with."
