Barry Town United, Cwmamman United and Cwmbran Celtic are among the Southern clubs facing long trips North in the JD Welsh Cup third round. Welsh Premier League Barry take on Huws Gray Alliance leaders Caernarfon Town at their Oval stadium in North Wales, while Welsh League teams Cwmamman and Cwmbran are away against Bangor City […]
Newport County will face a couple of familiar faces when they play Cambridge United at Rodney Parade next month. The FA Cup second round draw was made live on BBC television and County’s reward for their 2-1 first round win against Walsall was the home tie manager Michael Flynn wanted. Newport are eighth in League […]
Justin Tipuric and Rhys Webb are major doubts for Wales’ autumn series opener against Australia on Saturday. Flanker Tipuric has a thigh injury while scrum-half Webb is nursing a knee problem ahead of a demanding schedule that also sees Wales tackle Georgia, New Zealand and South Africa. Wales are already without injured openside Sam Warburton – the British and Irish Lions captain will not play again until later this season – so 51 times-capped Tipuric’s absence would prove a considerable blow.
Sean Eardley has taken charge of Huws Gray Alliance leaders Caernarfon Town. The former Oldham Athletic player was assistant to Iwan Williams, who has been appointed manager of Welsh Premier League Llandudno Town. The two men were team-mates at Llandudno and worked together in a successful spell at Caernarfon. Williams, 32, replaces Alan Morgan, at […]
Wales No.1 badminton player Jordan Hart hopes to use the Yonex Welsh International Championships at the end of the month to underline her credentials as she bids for a place in the 2018 Commonwealth Games team. The 22-year-old Pembroke Dock-born player has been seeded at No.3 for the top-flight tournament and is targeting a podium finish on home soil. So far this year she has competed in Slovakia, Belgium, Poland and Holland and surpassed her seeding of No.4 in Poland when she reached her first Badminton Europe Circuit final. She beat England’s No.2 seed Georgina Bland in the semi-finals before eventually going down to Switzerland’s No.3 seed Ayla Huser in a thrilling final, 21-19, 24-22.
Head coach Paul Bodin is preparing his Wales team for the Uefa Under-19 Championship challenge. Bodin’s boys go to Antalya in Turkey for group matches against the hosts, Slovakia and Kazakhstan. Goalkeeper George Ratcliffe, Jack Bodenham, James Waite and Sion Spencer are the Cardiff City players in Bodin’s squad, while Swansea have had Brandon Cooper, […]
Merthyr Town have a two-week break from fixtures following their 1-1 draw at Redditch United. Their next match is against Chesham United away on Saturday, November 18, while they have a home game against Dorchester Town a week later. Manager Gavin Williams and his players have time over the break to prepare for a big […]
Claude Makelele has left his position as assistant coach at Swansea City to become head coach at KAS Eupen, the Premier League club have announced. Swans boss Paul Clement added Makelele to his coaching staff in January, having worked alongside him under Carlo Ancelotti at Paris St German. But the 44-year-old is set to return to management at KAS Eupen, who are currently bottom of the top flight in Belgium.
England captain Dylan Hartley has told his players not to go down fighting when they train with Wales in Bristol on Monday. Hartley will pack down against Wales’ Ken Owens when the two countries hold a series of scrum and line-out sessions, ahead of their respective autumn Tests which begin on Saturday. Wales face Australia in Cardiff, while England host Argentina at Twickenham.
Dig deeply enough in the early rounds of the FA Cup and you always find a Welsh connection. So will it be the Wrexham old boy or the former Newport County favourite who survives the replay between Billericay Town and Leatherhead? The 22-year-old midfielder Robbie Evans joined Billericay this season from Wrexham after making 120 appearances for the north Walians. He started the first round tie for the Isthmian League side at Leatherhead. Opposing him was the former Newport County midfield stalwart Lee Minshull, who made 133 appearances for the Welsh club as they fought their way back into the Football League. He is the current captain of Leatherhead.
John Kear has admitted feeling pained by Wales’ thrashing at the hands of Fiji that has ended hopes of progress at the Rugby League World Cup. The 72-6 scoreline was a record tournament defeat for Wales who cannot make the quarter-finals after two huge losses – they were beaten 50-6 by Papua New Guinea in their opening game – and can only fight for pride in their remaining match against Ireland. Head coach Kear confessed he felt bruised and said: “You feel like you’ve been kicked in the rocks, to tell you the truth.
The Wallabies hammered out a nine-try warning to Wales as they put Japan to the sword in their warm-up for this weekend’s clash with Wales in the opening game of the 2017 Under Armour Series at the Principality Stadium. There were five tries from dumper-truck centre pairing Tevita Kuridrani and Samu Kerevi and some further power running from wing Henry Speight. And the victory came without the help of top-choice half backs Will Genia and Bernard Foley.
For the second time in three years Welsh Bowls is celebrating a female world champion after Laura Daniels won the World Singles Champion of Champion singles title in Sydney. The 32-year-old Neath-born accountant, who is a member of the Earslwood IBC and Brynhyfryd Bowling Club, followed in the footsteps of Kathy Pearce, who won the title in Aberdeen in 2015. It was another great achievement on her route to the 2018 Commonwealth Games back in Australia on the Gold Coast. Earlier in the year Daniels won the British Isles singles title in Llandrindod Wells, when she came from behind to pip Ireland’s Bernie O’Neill 21-19 having at one stage trailed 18-9. She faced Malaysian superstar Emma Firyana Saroji in the final at the palatial St John’s Bowling Club.
Jonathan Davies isn’t giving up on reaching his half-century of Test starts in the Welsh midfield with Jamie Roberts. Davies may now be the star attraction in the Welsh side following his great performances with the British & Irish Lions in New Zealand in the summer, culminating in a drawn series and him being named as the Lions’ player of the series, but he still feels there is a future for the 93 cap Roberts. There may be evidence of Wales moving away from the crash ball tactics that made Roberts the focal point of the attack, the Harlequins centre is much more than a one-trick pony. If he hadn’t been he would never have survived to reach 93 caps and play on two Lions tours.
Cardiff Blues coach Danny Wilson paid tribute to Gethin Jenkins as his Wales prop helped inspire a 37-8 thrashing of Zebre at the Arms Park on Saturday night. It was skipper Jenkins’ first game since injuring his knee in the Blues’ Judgement Day win over the Ospreys at the Principality Stadium on April 15. The Lions prop – who will turn 37 this month – played for 56 minutes and looked as though he had never been away.
Llandudno have announced the appointment of Iwan Williams as their next manager following the departure of Alan Morgan last week. A statement released by the club after their 2-1 defeat at Bala Town confirmed the appointment of Williams, who leaves his post as manager of Caernarfon Town. Williams leaves the Cymru Alliance side top of […]
Paul Clement has admitted Swansea City are going in only one direction – downwards – if they continue to play at the base level they offered during their 1-0 home defeat to Brighton on Saturday. The Swans manager did not try to mask his team’s deficiencies as they slipped to a fifth home defeat in six matches, but refused to classify the current situation as a crisis – if only because they are one point from safety with 27 matches still to go. But there is no doubt that the club will be relegated if their form over the remaining matches reflects that shown in the 11 games so far.
Kayne McLaggon netted the only goal of the game as Barry Town handed The New Saints their first home defeat of season to seal a shock victory at Park Hall. The result leaves the top of the JD Welsh Premier League wide open with only goal difference separating The New Saints and Connah’s Quay, and […]
Michael Flynn said his Newport County were ‘almost perfect’ in their FA Cup win against League One Walsall. The Exiles won 2-1 to earn their place in the second round and manager Flynn said: “It was an outstanding, disciplined performance. “If we cut out those little things, we will be a very good team. “It […]
Cardiff Devils gave notice they are aiming to retain their Elite League title. Reigning champions Devils started with an intensity which rocked rivals Sheffield Steelers from the first shift. Sean Bentivoglio fired Devils ahead after less than a minute and head coach Andrew Lord said: “Our start was unbelievable. That first shift! “Let’s do that every […]
