Bangor University – training base for Wales squash star Tesni Evans – will be turning red on Friday as part of the Commonwealth Games We Are Red campaign. The university’s main arts building will be backing Team Wales by transforming itself into national colours to show support for their six athletes who will be competing. As well as Evans, currently ranked No.12 in the world, five weightlifters from the university are making the trip to the Gold Coast for the Games which start on April 4.
Conwy-born maths teacher and rally navigator Dan Nieroda began his 2018 rallying season last weekend when he joined Steve Robinson in his Mini for the Historic AGBO Stages at Weston Park. Nieroda had planned to contest the event alongside his regular driver, but an engine issue forced the withdrawal of the entry allowing him to be drafted in to guide Robinson in his Mini on what was only his second ever event. Having rallied a Mini of his own over a decade ago, Nieroda brought experience from both the driver and co-driver seats, and after the opening two stages the crew had already climbed over 20 places from their starting position of 53.

The dust has settled on the Six Nations and the ink has dried on the cheque given to the WRU for finishing runners-up in a tight contest for second place. But Robin Davey says the extra cash has come at a cost. Building for the future. That was at least, in part, what the Six Nations was meant to all about. But Wales, despite finishing a creditable second, went backwards in style and, incredibly, have no idea who their best No.10 is.
Wales C needs to become a regular fixture to showcase the domestic top-flight, writes Matthew Burgess. Whether you watched from on the stands at Jenner Park or on Sgorio, you couldn’t help but be entertained by a thoroughly competitive game of football as both Wales C and England C looked to play adventurous football and […]
Wales’ Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics teams have begun preparations in Australia ahead of next month’s Commonwealth Games. The men arrived on Wednesday, two days after the women, and both squads will now start their countdown on the Gold Coast ahead of the Games which starts on April 4. The two squads have been boosted by encouraging performances at the recent British Championships in Liverpool, where Welsh gymnasts brought home a haul of 14 medals across all competitions.
The Six Nations has been packed away for another year and with it the interest of many fans. But Robert Rees believes now is the perfect time for ‘event-going’ rugby fans to try some other stuff lower down the menu – and for regions and clubs to ride the wave of interest rather than ignore it. Welsh rugby crowds often vary so much throughout the regional/club calender, with success – or lack of – fixture times and international windows being the main culprits to the variation. It’s often a hot topic on social media platforms or down the clubhouse, but where have all the fans gone?
The organisers of Wales Rally GB have promised to take “full advantage” of the new closed road legislation, which came into force in Wales earlier this year, to create an exciting new-look route for this year’s event (4-7 October), with a shift of focus to the forests and venues of north Wales. A change in the law, which allows local authorities to suspend the Road Traffic Act for authorised motorsport events without requiring individual Acts of Parliament, came into force in Wales on 2 February this year. This won’t see long stretches of the A470 closed for rally cars to blast along, but it will see small sections of B roads closed, possibly joining forest stages such as Penmachno South and Penmachno North, and Dyfi and Gartheiniog, to make longer and more challenging speed tests. “Wales has some of the best driving roads in Europe and this initiative will provide the perfect platform to showcase the very best of the Welsh countryside,” said the 2017 Wales Rally GB winner Elfyn Evans at the time of the closed road announcement. “With the success of events like Wales Rally GB, Welsh motorsport is very much on the up and this will only encourage even more visitors to our region.”
Former Cardiff Devils captain Ryan Finnerty brings his Manchester Storm team to Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay this evening (Wednesday, 7.30pm). Mid Wales racing driver Ben Power had to contend with a burst brake line as well as snow, as he launched his campaign in the 2018 National Legends Car Championship with MRF Tyres. Ryan Giggs is determined to promote young talent in his new role as Wales manager after playing his part in the rise of Marcus Rashford. Giggs was assistant manager at Manchester United when Rashford was handed his debut as an 18-year-old in a 2016 Europa League tie against Danish club Midtjylland. Rashford scored twice after replacing Anthony Martial, who had been injured in the warm-up, and has gone on to star for United and England — and Giggs insists he is keen to give youngsters opportunities on his Wales watch.
Non Stanford has urged Welsh sports fans to get behind Team Wales’ bid for success as the countdown begins to the Commonwealth Games. The former world triathlon champion is already out in Australia as she prepares for her event which is on the opening day of the Games on April 5. But the majority of Welsh competitors are yet to make their way to the Gold Coast for events that run between the opening ceremony on April 4 and April 14.
Cardiff Blues have confirmed that John Mulvihill has been appointed to take over from Danny Wilson as head coach. It brings to an end a long and winding route for the region who believed they had both Geordan Murphy and Jim Mallinder lined up, only for those appointments to fall through. Following Wilson’s decision to move on at the end of the season, the search for a successor was undertaken in conjunction with the Welsh Rugby Union.
Bowls is very much a family affair for Anwen Butten, who will be heading to her fifth successive Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The 45-year-old made her Team Wales debut in Manchester in 2002, when she picked up the first of her two medals to date in partnership with Joanna Weale, and is showing no signs of weakening in her resolve to claim a gold before she retires. Her second medal came in Delhi in 2010, when she struck bronze once again in the women’s pairs in tandem with Hannah Smith. Eight years on, she travels with arguably the most talented Welsh women’s bowls team of all-time in pursuit of gold and glory.
